The way TundraPlugger has been tearing it up in North Dakota, I wanted to give Missoula a good try today as weather was nice, mid 60s, and no rain until evening. I got about 5 hours of detecting in, and did 4 front yard permissions. All had promise so I took my time and carefully detected. These homes dated from the late 1920s to the mid 1940s.
The first yard started out slow, I was a bit worried that some dirt work had been done, but soon found a couple of wheat cents, then a nice Merc Dime. A bit later I pulled a Silver Rosie, and a few more wheats and some clad, so not bad at all!
The second yard was a complete bust, nice looking lawn but must have been previously detected as there were no coins at all.
The third yard was a 1933 home on a large corner lot, a few really big trees and original lawn. A good yard, that produced a Teddy Roosevelt political coin, a Silver Rosie and Merc Dime, some wheats, and a few oddball things I gave to the owner... 38 cal bullet, toy wheels, pinback, and a few wheat cents. I was quite happy with my finds to this point, the very nice owner wished me great success, and that proved to come true! As I finished the yard, a really nice young lady came home next door, I visited a bit, and she gave me the OK to check their front yard.
As I crossed the property line (which I had strictly observed before), I got a smooth 92-93 on the AT Pro, and hoped for the best. About 5" down I saw Big Ben Franklin looking at me! Delighted with that find! Further up this first grid I found the Turquoise and Sterling ring, and a small military button. The rest of the yard proved to be hard to work with fairly tall grass and some new dirt as I was finding 5-6" copper Memorials and Clad Dimes. I told myself to BE PERSISTENT and keep going, thinking I may have a chance for a larger silver somewhere. After a bit, I got a strong 93-95 signal, smooth in one direction and a bit choppy going 90 degrees to the target. Wow... hoped for Big Shiny and about 8" down I saw the rim of a large silver coin, turned out to be a 1926-S Peace Dollar!! It was hard to get out as I had to cut thru some roots to extract the coin, and I did put a light rub on the obverse of the Silver Dollar. Hard to believe this is my 3rd Montana found Silver Dollar this year, and my 12th found while detecting here. Am very thankful for that!
I could see rain moving into the area from the southwest, so I packed it up for the day and headed home. It is very fun to have such good finds and am grateful to have done so. Hopes this pulls me up a bit there TundraPlugger!
