Can you make a living out of MD

My wife would probably not want to sell the house and live in a van down by the river....but it could be fun to try for a while!
FUNNY, I DID sell the house and got rid of the wife too. Maybe that is your problem.:lol: It has been fun. Really, I did. :-)~~~

After giving this thread considerable thought (2-3 minutes) I truly think you have a better chance to teach a snake to play bongos, than any chance of making MD,ing a career......

I'm a newbie, maybe that will be me that stumbles upon across a pot of gold, that'd make my day!!

if pulltabs become 1700 dollars an ounce then i'd have a good chance

people I agee with houndpound on this one. Keep your 401k and dont quit your day job. Your gona be lucky ta buy batteries gas food ect. Its great to have a dream and live it. But you have to pull your head out of your hine end ever now and then and just really savor the time you have with your hobby.

Hey, dog pound, do you pound hounds too? :wow: Call the Humane Society!

I have fantasies about living in Cancun, where the livin' is cheaper and my Excal can sing that sweet "bling song" that one can never tire of, but for most of us, with kids, a wife, other family, it would be selfish to move out there or any good-producing area just for detecting. I savor my time with this hobby, and I savor the time with my family too. For those of you who are retired, the dream can be more a reality, I suppose.

Maybe if you lived in Japan. Seems to be the hot spot on this forum.

As someone mentioned earlier, if you did have to rely on it to put food on your plate it would become tiresome I think, but in Japan if you hunted 8 hours a day and had enough beaches in your area you probably COULD make a living out of it.

The main factors are the high denomination ¥500 ($6.50) and ¥100 ($1.30) coins and high purity gold worn (mostly 18k).

Problem in my area is there are really only 3 good swimming beaches. If I hunted them every day, I'm sure I'd hunt myself out of a job pretty quickly. Just ask 18kRonin and the "silver mine".:p

How many new hunters have sprouted up recently? I realize Japan is incredibly large from a MD perspective but since you guys have been posting all those wonderful 18K and Plat finds...how many new faces/coils do you see swinging away? BTW, how's that new MD club you guys were planning to put together comming along:lol:

Oh yeah...Benson there's a great thread a member named Predecimal put together if you click on the link OBN posted. He made a great start of it but about 2/3'rds way through a solid month of hunting (every day) he came down with a bad respiratory infection, flu I think and had to take some time off. Hasn't posted much since Jan of 2011. I'd starve BTW.

Well as you say I may get Lucky ,as I am retired I have plenty of times on my hands
If you live in FL, you will have plenty of company on the beach. Some mornings look like a club hunt starting. 10 years ago you could have made a living MD'ing, but not today, the pie has been sliced to thin.

Im retired.... everything paid for and now living in Fl. 3 months earnings.... around $2000 from ARA. Ive been detecting almost 18 years in many states so i have a pretty good knowledge of how a detector works. Right now i hunt almost every day and get in 4 to 7 hours. There is a learning curve like any job, but you have to get there quickly. You have to have good equipment, be able to travel, learn the wind, tides and beaches... if you are water hunting like me. Precious metal is up right now.... wont always be. You have to get known to get the opportunity to hunt with others in spots you might not know about. The beaches are NOT consistent, for the last month they just havent produced. There is now more competition than ever and more PIs and Xcals than you can shake a stick at. You really have to enjoy doing it and i wouldnt if i felt the pressure to produce on a pay check basis. If you have the ability and knowledge to write a book, DVD, or some additional supplement you might make enought to supplement your retirement. I do not expect and obviously will not make a living detecting..... but i love the hobby and the people i meet along the way. Europe is different.... the US is a very young country not nearly the relics or finds they have. To me the phrase 49ers come to mind.... the is a lot of detectors out there now. As long as precious metals stay high there will be... but there may be more rules coming as well. If you have the income or means.... get out there and make a buck.... but dont forget about family and friends..... remember its just a hobby.

Your better off with a job at Burger King. The steady paycheck, free meals and benefits will always win out over the occasional $1000,00 ring find that you would sell for less than half for scrap.I have had jobs that you start out in the morning with nothing and by the end of the day you need to make $200.00 to pay all your bills and the same thing the next day and everyday after that.If you never worked for yourself then this is just a fantasy.People that have worked for themselves know what it's like to wake up Monday morning with nothing and have to make things happen everyday to make a living. There are exceptions too every rule but I wouldn't risk my living on it.And don't forget about Uncle Sam, eventually he will want his cut which would be about 1/3 of all your finds. It is a good bonus to a retirement but I would never!! want to rely on it,too many variables. This is my 2¢ and I am always right...about 10% of the time. :D
