Can we change....

"Tot-lot" is a term of disdainment that older adults use when describing a children's playground. The people that coined the phrase generally dislike children, their playfulness, loudness, hyperactivity, crying, and messiness. These people only see the negative side of children.

This term caught on in metal detecting forums due to its shortness, and people that don't hate children started using it as well. When these people use the term back in the real world with others that don't hate children, it is very awkward like you describe. Great post.

Call them "Playgrounds."

people ask why I have expensive equipment if I do not make a living from it. I have to tell them it relaxes me.

If we spent this much on hunting or fishing it would be "Manly," but because it is something they are jealous of or don't understand it is "creepy."

When I tell them I don't detect beaches, that's when I get the weird look.

Yeah, Why do people think you can only detect beaches?

Switch from years of dirt detecting to beach detecting and you will find that finding a target in the sand is not easier, even with a scoop.

Sort of on topic.....

Whenever someone gives me that look when I say my hobby is metal detecting I ask them what they do with their spare time....then I get to look at them weird.

Those who don't understand criticize! When they lose their car keys at a beach or that diamond ring somewhere in their yard, who are they going to call.........

Rick, these could be the same people who save all of their belly button lint and toe nail clippings.
