Big Heavy Rock

It does not look like any rock I ever saw.

I think it could be a meteorite or some outer space junk.

BIG BIG bucks if it's a meteorite. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Keep us posted on any information.

I just sent your pictures to my cousin. He's a geologist & knows his stuff. He'll know for sure. I'll keep you posted. If it's a meterorite can I get a finders fee????? For the id, that is..:cool::lol:

Heres what a pyrite concretion looks like, pretty similar

Looks realy interesting!!

It's not unusual to have meteorites land in the mountains.
Higher altitude and basicaly a vertical wall for it to hit.
Saw one hit in the Teatons when climbing the Grand there. Hit one peak and skipped off and slammed into another.

Natural History museum would be a good place to get it checked.

Would be awesome if it was a meteorite !

Kinda reminds me of the big frozen poop ball that joe dirt found in the movie

So how do I find out what it is?

Google your local college or university and find the appropriate department and email them pictures.

before you do, you will have to slice off a piece and take a look on a freshly cut piece, (compare to those on the web), take a clear pic of the fresh cut as well. If you do have a meteorite than you will most likely end up with a chunk of bucks, wishing you the best.

P.S. best not leave that out in plan site, a neighbor might get the same idea.

After looking at several huge ones at a fossil and gem show. Could be a meteorite. Try not to damage it until someone checks it. I'm hoping a meteorite crashes through one of my cars one day. One that size goes through a car, a $500 car will sell for millions:lol:

more pics

here's a few more pics of different sides, does it help any?

I cleaned it up with a pressure washer...

that's one interesting item for sure! it's probably best not to go hacking at it or slicing it until you get a pro's idea on what it may be. if it is indeed a meteorite, it would be worth a lot more if it's undamaged.
was there any kind of depression (crater) in the ground where you found it? something that big and heavy should have left a mark. of course, if it hit a bazillion years ago, that may not show anymore.
but wow, what a cool find regardless of what it is. and with a lower end detector! good job!

I hope for a meteorite, but at should be way heavier than 36 pounds for that size. That looks like a basketball. Cool find either way, hoping for good news though!!!

Just curious what were you up in the mountain looking for, is there structures or something that drew you to that particular area..

You might be right on that point. The other thing it might be is a very large geode. It would be hollow in the middle to account for the weight.

here's a rough estimate on the size...
