"Bicycle Chain" Appraisal...$30,000

Very nice find, congrats. I often wonder what the point of "appraisals" is. One jewelry store near me advertises that their jewelry "will appraise for twice our selling price". How can something immediately be worth twice what you paid for it new? Isn't an appraisal supposed to represent the market price? While I'm on a rant, I also take Antiques Roadshow appraisals with a large grain of salt.

Congratulations on the find but good lord is it ever UGLY. Sell it fast before it can contaminate you .

I can see the advertising team coming up with the slogan - Taste....some people have none.

To answer both questions in succession: It isn't, and no, it isn't. :D

There are 2 main types of appraisals, the first is for true current value (such as when you want to sell your house) and the other is for "replacement" value in case of loss, which is what you are seeing here. This type of appraisal is done for insurance purposes and is what the insurance company will pay out if the item gets lost or stolen.

Re/ Appraisal

For sure a "replacement value" is not what an item will bring on the market. I asked similar questions. However, that figure IS what it would cost to have a similar piece made--materials and labour. If someone wants to drag that down to a scrap-out, pawn shop price, well--let it rain. I would expect to consign that item for about 6 or 7 with a bit of restoration.

Re/ ugly, but still shiney...

Hence the term "bicycle chain". Closest I could get.

Yes, thank you for adding that. I didn't make it very clear in my comment and I should have.

Congrats

Congratulations on your find. It is spectacular. I must admit you have guts that's a man's chain and any man who would wear that........well, I hear drug dealers have computers and can read too.

Wow CJC , thanks for updating us on the chain. It was awesome when you first posted it, and now its awesomeness has been confirmed  :waytogo:

Don’t let the haters and nitpickers get you down, I know myself and a lot of other hunters appreciate the work that you do. :pirate:

Most jewelry stores have a ten times markup. If you paid one hundred dollars. their cost was ten. I can't believe someone could lose something that valuable and not file a report of it being lost. I think that would have to be done before an insurance company would even pay the claim.

Nice find....Really nice find!! Congrats! BTW, I received my copy of the book I bought from you. Can't wait to try the settings/tips you offered! I think pulse power is next on my list!

In my mind is the ultimate question, where did he find it and with what machine? Certainly not from any totyard I hunt! LOL Come from the east coast, west coast, Japan? Florida? Lots of unanswered questions and the fellow has not even comeback to see our comments???? What's with that?

Wonder if it was a beach find? Is he a water hunter?

This thread needs a lot of info to make it even more interesting that just some eye poppin' bling!

I would not even have shown or told as much as he did... claim jumpers  I think too much has been said, but glad for the showing. I still don't know what it has to do with a bicycle
