To the best of my knowledge, no one in the club is using the Fisher to hunt NJ beaches. Granted, I don't know everyone in the club. Most of the dedicated beach hunters use Sovereigns or Excals. When I asked the club members at a meeting i got a resounding response to go Excal or Sovereign GT. These guys are the experts so I took their advice. I understand that the Fisher and Whites are excellent machines, however, the user poll in NJ comes back Minelab. These are people who are on these beaches everyday, voting with their wallet.
The key to using the Sovereign is not to drop it in the water. It has an arm band for just that reason. That, and most of the wet sand hunting isn't in the water, but at the water's edge.
I bought the GT because as rookie on a steep learning curve hunting the sand is a demanding task. That, and many of Jersey's beaches present unique challenges to water hunters. Those range from steep breakers to big drop offs, to strong rip currents. These are all surmountable, but first, learn how to detect.
Many good suggestions there. Best among them, Chk out the Jersey Shore Beach and Surf Hunters Face Book page.
