fresh water
If you're going to be hunting a large lake then it will be different than the ocean beaches.
I hunt only fresh water and most stuff is in the water. Wet sand to waist deep. You can also find stuff in the dry sand but that's hit hard by a lot of people so there is usually less there.
Being one of the great lakes, it's possible your area may have a rocky bottom or rocky spots. People tend to go where the sand is rather than the rocks so those spots will probably produce more. Not that you shouldn't scan the rocky areas as well, since ice/waves can move stuff anywhere. Just saying, the sandy spots seem to produce a lot more in my limited experience.
Look for cuts in the beach.........which are places the bigger waves have carved sand out of the beach. That lets you scan deeper so you have more chance of finding goods there. Look for deep holes closer to shore. People will be more likely to swim in those spots.
Don't overlook the parking lots(if they aren't paved) and the paths/grass leading from the parking areas to the beach. A lot of stuff gets dropped when people grab their stuff on the way home. Plus they fumble in their pockets.
