Awaiting “new” Sovereign GT

If you're coming from an AT-pro, get ready for some hair-pulling adjustment period. The tones and sounds are all different and wacky.

I would suggest getting to fairly clean spots first (wide open beach, with targets spread out). And hunting in all metal. Then when you get a hit, switch to check in disc. Do that for a few days, before tackling hunting in disc. mode.

The swing speed is all different. Signals will seem to have "tails" on them, etc... Sounds are way different than standard machines. Can drive you nuts if you immediately try in some target-rich area.

Good advice from Tom. I had one and loved it. It is a great wet sand machine.

I love my Sov GT BUT when I first got it I was beginning to hate it A few time I looked for a sturdy tree to wrap it around. Thankfully I did not find one. It takes quite some time to learn what the machine is telling you. Even after almost six years of use it still fools me from time to time. Still a danged good detector and once you learn it you should learn to love it.

Got Ikelite case on ebay, 9" x 6 3/4" x 5 1/2" . Should be big enough, but somewhat heavy at 13 lbs!!!

Not many waste time doing what your doing, i have a pristine GT with accessories i am not using, new - they don't make them anymore, so it's been sitting for year's, if you wanted a water proof machine , for what your spending you could have bought a high end WP machine, and lighter :realitycheck: After your done , your reward will be a tank- weighing more than a -CTX3030 , however if you want a 2nd, or any body else, want's to follow suit , PM me :lol::D Good luck however with your project , we will give you an A for effort , happy hunting, Earl

Tru-dat.....but only in $450 total with Ikelite case. Hope to get lighter WP down the road. I was looking for used Excal 1000 but none in my budget.

Yea but if he hip mounts the box, weight wont be much of an issue as apposed to having it mounted on the rod...I can do 7 hour hunts easily with my GT hip mounted, my legs usually give out before my arms do :D

That what I plan on doing, hip mount all the way. And the Ikelite has extra handle hardware and other attachment that once removed, will decrease by a few pounds.

Slimp

? Whats the since in water proofing the machine if your hip mounting it, ? For the thread maker, you have 450 in it plus the cost of a new gt, so your close to a Excal 2 ?

Oh....my “new” in quotes for thread title is because it’s a used Sovereign GT but “new” for me :D Sorry for confusion. Sovereign GT was $425 and used Ikelite waterproof box bid out at $25 on eBay..so $450/is sum total, and no more money needs spent on this project! Woohoo, wife ready to divorce me over this much spent as it is.....:(

Lol

Ok, bet you have a new honey moon when you find the 1st diamond ring she's going to claim, make her earn it, tease her a bit, as remember you were busting my chops  , as far as 450 that was a good price, usually the older Sov's go for that, if its 25 clams for the water proof box, i would be carefull, do a tub test 1st , happy hunting, Earl

Thanks Earl!! I'm hoping some rings in my future! Will definitely bathtub test the Ikelite. They are usually expensive but used ones can be had low-cost on ebay if no one is bidding on them.

Be careful, don't spend too much time with your new girlfriend, I mean detector:lol: My wife gets jealous of me spending too much time detecting.:lol:

My wife kind of made me choose........... and like a country music song.....honey i miss you.

Hey Mike, good luck with it, I've found a lot of good stuff with it. It does already have the rubber on the toggles which Raider5 suggested to me. Just remember SLOW swings! Joe

Finding rings is dependent on three things: Location, Detector and Technique. One down and two to go!

If water hunting, I'd leave the stock coil on it. If you switch over to wide-open, wet sand beaches, look at a 15" W.O.T. coil it really packs a deep punch in the sand and lets you cover a lot of ground, quickly!

After you get it built, throw a couple of those silica gel packs inside. They will mitigate moisture and help if there is ever a small leak.

The Sov is a proven work horse. Get about a 100 hours under your belt and you'll be sitting pretty.
