Attention NEW F2 owners.

Fisher F2 problems?

Hello. I own a fisher F2. I may be having problems with the detector and don't know what to do. First, the last dozen or so signals produced, nothing in the hole. Also, when pressing the pinpointer the pinpoint buzzer will go off regardless of where I aim the detector. Is anyone with an F2 having this problem?

Hey Joe...

Here's what I would do...to get going....

Change your batteries, regardless if you think they're new and good.
Re-seat your Coil connection. You might need a pair of bent nosed pliers to get it tight. It MUST be tight.
Lose you Cell phone, keep it in your car.
Remove those steel toed boots, wear something else.
Make sure you bring your hand-held pin pointer.
Set your Sensitivity on no more than 3 bars.
Notch out everything BUT Nickel, Dime and Qtrs.

Either place your OWN target, or go find one. (really)

Now, sweeping no more than 12" in all directions (east, west, north and south) You should be able to accurately determine WHERE the target is.
Verify you have a valid target by sweeping at 90 degree angles to it, and with a repeatable, consistent VD number on your screen.

Now, Repeat the sweep, but this time press and hold the Pinpoint button. Your LCD screen should look something like this.

+ + + + + ++05 + + + + +
+ + + + + ++04 + + + + +
+ + + + + ++03 + + + + +
05 04 03 + + + + 03 04 05
+ + + + + + 03 + + + + +
+ + + + + + 04 + + + + +
+ + + + + + 05 + + + + +

EDIT...^this isn't posting correctly ^ the numbers should line up in a + shape, going from lower numbers in the middle to higher numbers going outwards.

Your target should be dead center as indicated by the #'s getting larger as you move your MD further away from the target.

Once your MD ic centered, go ahead and lower it all the way to the ground.(Your Pinpoint button is STILL pressed btw. If you FINAL number is 03, that means your target is dead center of your coil, and 3 inches under. (I add an inch in very moist or sandy soil)

Dig your plug three inches deep, grab your hand-held pin pointer and start probing. The Fisher pointer has to be VERY close, about 1/4 inch, or sometimes even touching the target to signal. The Garrett Pro pointer will signal when you're half a block away...( lol..this is a JOKE)

Targets can be hard to find...for me, a hand-held is a necessity..not an option.

If you still can't find your target, get up and sweep your plug, and your hole. Where does the MD say it is? If it's in the plug, as your MD says it is, start probing the entire plug again with your hand-held. If its in your hole, then dig out some more dirt, and scan the dirt, not the hole...repeat if you still can't find it.

This is how I started to learn....as you get to know the F2...it'll get easier...and faster..and you'll turn UP the sensitivity and Notch out only Iron.......I'm only two weeks into this and I learn everyday...

Good luck...

Thanks coin. I will certainly revisit all that valuable info. Thanks for taking the time to help.

In addition to instantly probing the hole or plug with the propointer, i will first grab the plug and swing the plug in front of my detector, thats laying o the ground. I usually position my detector on the ground, coil face up somehow. This makes it easyto swing the plug in front of it. This automatically lets you know if the target is in the plug.

Thanks again coin. Im sure i will get to the bottom of this problem. Mybiggest problem is my pin-pointer ( onthe detector) . It goes off where ever i point my detector, while holding the botton down. Every singleinchof my backyard.

Yea, thats what I read.....

Try somewhere else other than your yard.....

My backyard is CRAZY.....Ive got tons of junk, AND power lines too...

The F2 is Crazy sensitive......it was hard for me...still is sometimes. I've coin hunted on ONE bar sensitivity cause there was so much chatter......

Great thread. I tried to use my F2 today and it was going crazy..I just installed new batteries so I know they are good. I will reseat the coil connector in the main body and try that. The sad thing was i was at a site and wanted to use it but couldn't. The unit is just now over a yr old and I was worried if ity was the unit I would be out of luck and out of warranty.

Will see what happens and post back later.

Happy Hunting

Don't forget Chris , Fisher warranties all of their units for 5 years. One of the many reasons I purchased both my F2 and F5. I had my F2 for one day, and it was D.O.A. after about an hour of machine time. Fisher repaired and returned it in a timely manner.Just give them a call and get an RA (return Authorization) #.

Call Fisher about this to find out. F2 has fixed ground balance, it may be set to something that is way to positive for your soil.
If you are getting a solid tone even pointing it into the air then I would just send it back. Either way if pinpointing is impossible I would send it back anyways.

Well I double checked the batteries and the connection and it's still going bonkers. I feel confident that in this case it's not the soil where I am as I have detected my yard previous times and it's work wonderfully.

Will contact Fisher, thanks for the heads up I either forgot or just really didn't pay attention to the warranty of 5 yrs. Good to know :)

Happy Hunting!

Don't forget to let us know what Fisher says/does. :)

I had been reading about the F2 for a while before pulling the trigger. Today I just received my F2. after reading the instructions I figured how to notch out Fe and dropped the sensitivity down a couple bars then went to the lot next door and began scanning. My son and I found a pull tab, pull top from a can of vienna sausages, a brass hose bib. and a clad dime!

Then we drove to an older tot-lot. It was very trashy and we saw lots of foil on the top of the soil around several picnic tables, lots of foil readings in the 20s we ignored, but managed to find a clad penny(zinc), button to a pair of jeans(dime), and while we were walking out I got a solid 85 reading. We were losing light fast and I was all excited! Finally I then unearthed an old pull tab.

My son found a pearl earring exclaimed it was plastic and tossed it into a 55gal trash drum  It told him that before you throw ANYTHING in the garbage, show it to me. lol He said he saw a seam around the pearl so he new if was fake. Then I told him that earrings usually have gold or sterling silver settings or they will turn the wearers skin green. We just chalked it up to a lesson.

I was pretty nervous about getting a dud but so far it is working fine. I did have a minor problem at the start then replaced the batteries and all was well. I am sorry to hear of others having problems right out of the box. It would surely discourage me too, but hang in there these are pretty good machines! Even being a noob I walked out the door and found stuff. My son is totally pumped about us having one!

I've yet to pull the trigger for the F2... still reading a few post about it

ok, I called Fisher yesterday and spoke to Felix. He suggested for me to try another coil if I had one so i put the 4" coil on it and BAM, she works great. So, it's the coil. Iw ill call him back today to resolve that.

For those who are teetering on the fence whether or not the Fisher products or the F2 specifically is a good machine...It is. I love mine. I used it for several months last year, not as much as I would have liked but I love it.

A great buy and Fisher makes great stuff.

Stop waiting and get that machine in your hands in time to get outside and enjoy the weather. :D

I will update the coil situation as I find out what they do.

Until then,

Happy Hunting!

So i called fisher about my pinpointing problem. She said it was normal to hear a signal ramdonly when pointing anywhere on the ground, if you hold the pinpoint button down. When in pinpoint mode the detector goes into all metal mode that is ultra sensitive. It may have been picking up stray signals, especially with the 10 inch coil. I switched to the 8 inch coil and found it to work much better. Easier to pinpoint as well. As i learn the detector, im getting to dig deeper signals. I find that is you start digging a signal with rescan the hole, you get a clearer indication of id and depth.

I found my first merc tonight, a 1920 no mint mark. Nice and clean. I will post pics this weekend.

I do love my F2. I would recommend it to anyone. Being new to detecting in general and having to learn a new detector, or any detector in that case can be frustrating. It takes a it to learn the signals and tricks of the trade, so to speak. This is definately an art form.

I plan on upgrading to a AT Pro in a couple of weeks. I detect with my brother so it will be great to get out there with dual detectors. Silver and Gold here we come lol. Happy hunting all

Right on! I'm glad you got it straight, even better since you didn't have to return it.

A MERC!!?? Wow that's incredible!! I haven't found a single silver Rosie yet, only clad. Keep swinging!

I'm glad I passed on buying the F2... I got laided off from work yesterday... only worked 7 weeks....
