Anyone know what this is?

The salt/pepper or whatever goes into the cavity under the dial with the screen and hole in it. You turn the dial and align the hole with the cavity opening and pour in the contents. Then turn the dial to close it off or align the screen area over the hole and sift. I have been looking at different things sold on e-bay and beleive there was a small clock in the hole that is in the lid. I seen a packet watch snuff box that had a similar type hole with collar that had a clock in it. So I think it was a pocket watch salt shaker. Too bad the clock part is missing.

I think it is a old snuff tin from back when they used to snort powdered tobacco. The "grate" may have been for grinding your own tobacco plug (called a "carotte").

Or maybe not...

How many people chained salt shakers to their clothing???

Well,My Google didnt know a thing about this.Would you any objections if i showed it to a finds advisor i know, maybe he can shed some light on it and its driving me crazy

Back in the day, salt was worth a lot of money. It was used for trade because it was all imported. I do not think it is a salt shaker. Holes are large for a valuable commodity. I think that TexasPast is on the right theme, powder to dry ink/blot a paper used for writing. It could be very old if that is the case. People used scholars to write/read documents as education was not a common thing. You are talking along time ago. Piqued my curiosity! :?:

Wow, if that's the case it IS old. This is very interesting. Maybe Simons friend can shed some light on it.

Hope you find out what it is. I sure don't have a clue. But the powder box for writing sounds like it just might be the answer. :?:

It would be nice to more than just a salt shaker and yes the holes are quite large. The homesite dates between the Civil War and the 1940's. The newest coin found there was 1943 (quarter).

I asked around for any ideas and this is what we came up with. Put tea leaves in and dunk it in hot water, put lavender seeds in it and it becomes a pot pouri, smelling salts, oil and light the top becomes a light, a strainer of some sort. All sound possible to me. Can't wait to find out what it actually is

I know you tie a string to one end of it and and at the other end it's tied to my ear phone we can talk now ...Hello hello HELLO

Update to very old thread.

It turned out to be a powder container ladies carried with them when they went out to social events. Hence the phrase...'go powder your nose'. This old thread popped up in a google search so I had to reply. Only 11 years ago...lol.
