Ruger Redhawk, 44 magnum, 300 gr solids, never had a problem, drops them like they've been hit by Thor's hammer. HH Steve

Yeah' I'm probably gonna get a 44 mag. Not worth chancing walking up on the wrong hog. There is a bunch of them.

Here are a couple monsters the dogs ran out of the swamp. One 350# other pushing 500#. They get big & nasty here in SC.:D

Nice ones there! Weird but all we ever see are black ones. I may have to mount a gopro to a 44 magnum to get footage though:lol:

I've done it with a 357 Herrett...

10 inch barrel Thompson/Center Contender with a 3x scope.

Start with a 30-30 rifle case shorten it about .25 inch and neck it up to .35 caliber, fireform before using as a hunting load and never use it in a different barrel/chamber...

That .357 with the right load is more then enough. It's all about bullet placement. The small butcher shops around here actually use a 22 rifle, They draw and imaginary x between the eyes and ears and shoot the center of the x and they drop in their tracks.

We can hunt them here on public lands during small game season. Just have to use small game weapons. A well placed .22lr in the ear does the job.

A domestic hog in a cage or a pen is one thing. A feral hog with a vendetta is another. My vote would be a 12 gauge shotgun with 5 rounds of 00 buck. That way you can at least try to take off its face while you are shaking like a dog trying to pass a double edge razor blade.

The white one pictured earlier took a lot more than five rounds of buckshot. Try knifing one with a bulldog locked on him. Now that's an adrenalin rush!

I helped my dad on our farm(1200 acres of bottom land) and have seen lots of wild hogs. The first thing I would do if I ever thought about shooting at one, especially with a handgun, is locate a tree I could climb FAST! A wounded, mad hog will chew off a leg if not worse. The worse thing you ever want to do is mess with a sow with her piglets. Those sows will attack without anything more than seeing you.

Me? I would only shoot one if I had no other choice, unless you are specifically going hog hunting and with a rifle. Keep that tree in sight though.

Not any trees I can climb. I got troubles climbing in a boat. Climbed a tree once when two hogs chased me but I was about 17 and the tree was an old oak leaning I actually ran up sideways. These hogs are marsh hogs. They got extra muscle from roaming around in the mud all day. I won't be looking for a side shot if I got to take one of these beasts down. They'll be running right at me:shock: I can't carry a shotgun where we are fossil hunting. But I got a permit to carry a pistol, switchblade, taser, etc. Don't think a taser will work on a hog:lol:

I beg to differ with that. Between the eyes is where the skull is the thickest and it is a natural ramp to deflect the bullet.

sure enough huh? ok then....you go right ahead and shoot that mofo in the ear hole while he;s coming at you . good luck with that. i'll stick with the between the eyes shot.

unlike some of the forum members here, i have extensive hunting experience with deer and hogs. ive been swarmed by hogs running everywhere, and been charged by them twice.

i've shot them with a shotgun, a rifle, and even a 44 mag ruger redhawk. i'm still here and never been chewed up. :D
