Anyone else to paranoid to wear headphones?

They have headphones with only one ear piece, I think they are called Rattlers or something like that, I saw them on the Kellyco site. I had a guy seek up on me in the woods one time while I was relic hunting and it scared the crap out of me. This guy didn't know how close he came to getting a shovel to the side of the head, you sure don't know what people are going to do these days, folks are crazy. Since that day I pay close attention to my surroundings..........HH, Wild Bill

Situational awareness is important at all times. Remember, it is not really necessary to be constantly looking at the ground you are sweeping... that is what the tones are for.... I mostly hunt woods or very old property, and yes, strange things have happened. However, I usually keep one earphone off and I am constantly looking around - every third swing or so. You can train yourself to do this in a short period of time - i.e. swing, swing, swing - look! etc, etc. Looking at the ground is really not helpful until you are pinpointing. Unless there are loose coins all over the surface... HH RickO

That's the very reason that when I have enough money I'm going to invest in a pair of these.

I just like to hear what's going on around me too. More curious than paranoid.

Have you spent some time in the Sandbox?

Please forgive my ignorance..:?: so I will be able to fit in here better.. what does this mean?:?::) thanks!

I usually wear my Sony MDR-NC6 earphones around my neck, when by myself and that works for me so far.

If someone is 'watching my back', I can put them on and use the noise canceling feature, which is the reason I bought them for listening to music.

The Ace 250 speaker tones carry and I don't like the fact that, in some areas, they can be heard half a football field away, or better, when the wind is right.

The fact is that this has caused me some moments of concern, having attracted the attention of questionable folks whom I didn't want to interact with.

If I really want to shut-out the world, I have some Sony earbuds that are wonderfully built for both sound and comfort, with in-line volume control.

I agree Eli - I have a 250 and the Easy Stow headphones so I wear them like they should be but I twist the cups slightly away from my ears so I still hear around me. I also hate to "advertise" that I have a metal detector to every one in a 3 block radius with the uncontrolled beeping. I tried ear buds but they just didn't feel right (and I use them with my MP3 player all the time). I guess the bottom line is
1) Situational awareness (especially when you're squatting down digging)
2) Someone to watch your back (and you theirs)
3) Have an exit route/strategy

I use Rattlers, and I love them for that one reason..... Keeps one ear open to hear all that is around you. Love em!!

I use Gray Ghost originals and although they block out a lot of noise I can generally hear people walking around me. I can see how it might be an issue for someone with bad hearing though.

I hunt those same Inner City parks as Jamie, (Jcham) does and NO WAY am I'm wearing headphones.. I've had the same questions asked and just go on my merry way. I hunt alone and am always well aware of my surroundings.. I've done OK without them. Am I missing those deep faint signals? Probably, but I love to hunt those parks. Parks that others say no way I'm not going there. That's where the good stuff is still waiting to be recovered..

You still hunting those parks (darn YOU) Is there anything left out there or do I need to find greener pastures:?: That one park I mentioned to you way out of the way just off of 4th generation company property. Man I have to tell you it just doesnt look any better. The guy I interviewed with asked me about Hobbies and I told him that I metal detect and said ya bonus your property is next to a park. He looked at me like I had three heads as he said he's never seen anyone on it hunting, he's been with the company 20 years.

Didnt get the job but I got the park, now I just need a detector to get to it:lol:

The headphones that came in the package deal from kellyco allow me to hear others while detecting. Maybe I shouldn't be able to hear anyone, but I can, so I don't worry about anyone sneaking up on me.

Luckily for me I live in an area where there aren't many seedy characters in our parks. I like the suggestion of only wearing one earphone, or even just turning up the volume, and wearing the phones around your neck if you're paranoid:)

I wear mine out in the desert since most areas are wide open and you can see someone or something coming from a long way off. Rattlesnakes can surprise you, but the ones around here are kinda puny due to the altitude.

I always wear mine with one earphone off to the side. I've had stupid dogs surprise me before and I don't like not being able to hear around me. It isn't natural.

I detect in some shady areas too in my city - thug riddled. I leave as soon as the sun starts to go down and stay near away from any ghettos nearby.

And always turn down the 'gibs me a dolla'. :D

I hunt the old parks in the city that for the last 10 ears has had the highest per capita murder ratio in the US. I use full headphones. Being paranoid does you no good. It makes you a target. Being aware keeps you respected and left alone. Also, hunting at sunrise cuts your risk down.:D
