Went to an old house in town today that is empty but has a smaller house on the lot with an elderly women living in it. I asked her and she said "Its my daughter's but go ahead". I get an hour into my hunt and half ways into the yard and ive got a wheat and some matchbox cars. Im bent over in front of the porch digging another penny signal when I thought I heard talking over my muff so I look over my shoulder and there she stands. I take off my muffs and she says the "Landlord" prefers I not be on the property. I was caught off guard and felt like an a$$. So I said thanks and sorry for the inconvenience. Anybody had this happen?

Yep! The man of the house says yes I can hunt, then the wife comes home and tells him she doesnt want someone there and since she wears the pants he comes and tells us we have to leave because his wife doesnt want us there, has happened to me several times in the past. I have to laugh everytime because this poor man has a wife who is the boss! Lol

I did just the opposite once, my wife said the neighbors "kid" (teenager) could shoot hoops in our driveway, I am done working late and taking a snooze on the sofa and I hear banging against the garage door (and not lightly either, like a rebound hit the door, it was intentional), and here is the neighbor "kid" with 4 of her friends bouncing the ball off the garage door (the basketball hoop is on the SIDE of our driveway not over the garage at all) so I told her to all hit the bricks, and she says my wife said it was OK. I told her I assume my wife thought you knew which direction the hoop was, not against the house! And to beat it.

Had this happen last year. Had permission and "Gameoftag" drove an hour and a half to get there and we were told the permission was rescinded. I really felt bad. The property was next to a park so we hunted that and we both got Silvers there.

I'm too new at the hobby to have this happen to me but something else has happened to me many times. My wife informing me who wears the pants! Any man that says otherwise is telling a fib :D I do trump her on the big decisions, she can have the rest.

Happened to me twice.
Once, a very elderly lady said I could hunt her yard, house was built in the 1880's. went home totally high, waiting to go back the next day.
That evening she called and said she talked to her son in another town, and he said it was not a good idea:mad:
Lesson here - IF YOU GET PERMISSION, DIG IMMEDIATELY

second time, older single woman with an 1890's house says OK, so I get to it.
30 minutes later, she hollers from the porch (too large to walk into her own yard) that her brother wants to detect it when he comes to town:mad:
Lesson here - IF YOU GET PERMISSION, IGNORE LOUD HOMEOWNERS.

Her daughter apparently thought the same way. Just makes a guy wonder what goes through their head that makes them paranoid.

Let me tell you what happened to me with something along this line. I did a lot of reaserch on an area and I figured there may be some Civil War stuff on a friends farm. I pull up and asked him for permission to hunt and he said go ahead. He asked me to stop back by on my way out and show him what I found. I hunted one part of his farm for about 2 hours with no luck at all. I was toasted because this was my third place to hunt that day. So I took a short cut back through the woods to the truck in a bottom beside the creek and I start getting tons of iron hits then BAM! I said to myself that is lead. Sure enough a 69 caliber three ringer. It was late in the day and I was planning on hunting there the next afternoon so I left and dropped back by his house. I showed him the nice mini ball that I found and told him I would like to come back tomorrow afternoon. He said that it would be fine but to call him before I came over. We traded cell numbers and I started home on a big high because I had found this place on my own. So I called him the next day and he wouldn't answer his phone for about three days. Then he calls me back and said his brother and son have an old metal detector and they decided they want to hunt the place and he would appreciate it if I didn't come back to metal detect. How would you feel about that?

Pretty peeved! I dont trust people when they ask to tell them what I find. I leave it at clad and wheats. If I find silver or Indians I keep my lips zipped.

Had a slightly different situation.
Found an 1885 schoolhouse that was fenced in. The fence was down in 3 places, but I called the township to ask for permission (and also told them about the down fence.) I was told the person in charge of making that decision wasn't in that day and would call me back later in the week.
Not wanting to make a pest out of myself I waited 4 days and called back.
Same person in a meeting
Waited 2 more days, no call. Finally called 3rd time and got in touch with an OK :D Only to be told another detector had gotten permission the day before and had already hunted it :mad::mad:

It has happened to me 2 times now. 1 time the ladies son did not like me there and the other I hunter for a few hours and was told I could come back the next weekend. Well the next weekend came and they decided I could not hunt there anymore. I asked if it was due to something I may have done and they said no. They where just not secure with me hunting. Stinks cause it was a 1887 house.

I was talking to a detectorist last year who had a vintage detector that really ate batteries. He was telling me how he had permission and was searching a yard and marking spots with flags. He found some old pennies and while he had his flags down (that I believe was his strategy to keep from using his battery life up while digging plugs) the guy came out and said he had to go somewhere and didn't like people on his property while he was gone. While I know this sounds like an extreme case it shows that you better get the stuff while the getting is good.

I had this happen to me for the first time last week. She said, "Yeah, he's my husband and he lives here, but it's MY house. I don't want my yard full of holes so you need to get out."

A man owned 2 homes side by side, one he lived in the other is falling down and vacant. He gave me permission to detect the one that is vacant. I hunted a couple hours cleaned up tons of trash, offered to help him rake leaves, the place was in better shape than before I showed up. I found a rosie, a couple wheats and a bit of clad.

Before I left I asked if he minded me coming to detect again sometime. After an uncomfortable pause and a long "Uuummm...", I told him don't feel obligated, I appreciate the opportunity I had to hunt. He asked if I would stop by before hunting again, and I told him I wouldn't detect without stopping and asking permission again first. He said that would be OK. I felt kinda weird about it and haven't been back.
