ok quick update, not sure if this narrows it down...

I just plugged it in with the back of and had a fan blowing onto the back... the tv stays on..? so wonder what this means

Hmm, I did say maybe a thermal problem

thanks for all the advice guys, I hope you don't take this as having wasted your time.. I am following your guidance, found a guy who will give me 75$ for it, and I am thinking about getting a new tv... should I start a thread on THAT? lol

I'm glad I asked you guys first I would have probably messed something up, but on the + side I'll make a few bucks and have definitely gotten a new potential hobby to start looking into.

haha, yea really! I haven't posted up pics of any finds yet, but I told my wife that when they equal enough to by a dedicated surf detector (thinking about the minelab excal 2) I am getting one!
