Any advice on these? This will be my backup detector. Which of these discriminate the best? Which one would you buy?

FWIW, I go back and forth between my Explorer and my 705 pretty easily. They don't sound exactly the same, but it's similar to a different dialect of the same language. I expect it would be about like the transition from/to an E-trac.

And when you consider that the CTX is a melding of a 705 and an E-trac, it's easy to see that they truly are machines that compliment each other.

Looks like to me that your Compadre is already backed up with that e-trac.

:heartylaugh:

More seriously, what are you doing - why the need for accurate discrimination?

Would you say the 705 has similar performance to the Explorer? If not, how much different is it?

I love the Compadre for tot lots/parks but in fields and home sites it just takes too much time to cover.

I guess you could say I am less concerned with depth as I am with discrimination and coverage.

I wouldnt mind the AT primarily for the waterproofing. But other than that..

I can get an ok deal on a Tejon but have seen Vaquero's go for less. I cant see the Tejon being that much better than the Vaquero, not to mention the Vaquero uses only one 9V vs 8AAs in the Tejon.

If you get the Vaquero, you can always grab a cleansweep later and totally subscribe to coverage at a shallow depth. I got started on my current Tesoro kick because of that coil - who knew that I'd enjoy the detectors so much?

That depends on how you measure performance. If you're asking if it will go as deep, then the answer is yes with equal size coils, and given that you have the proper coil for the desired targets and conditions.

It's just different. I can cover an area with the Explorer, and then go back with the Xterra and find more.....or vise versa....or go change coils on the 705 and find more yet. There are also places that are impossible to hunt with the Explorer, where the Xterra shines......and vice versa. All of which is why I say that they make perfect companion machines.

Yeah I had a Cibola a few years ago with a Cleansweep coil. Hate I sold it.

Well, you either disliked the nagging feeling that you were missing deeper targets or the weight/balance bugged you - or both.

FWIW, if it was a weight thing, some of the early versions of the cleansweep were filled with epoxy and were surprisingly heavy as a result - brick-like, even. The current incarnation weighs 1lb and 4oz or so.

Since you have an Etrac, I think the Xterra would be a good backup detector unless you want a waterproof fresh water machine, then the AT Pro.

I love my Tejon. A machine with super fast recovery like the Tejon/Vaquero would compliment the slow recovering etrac nicely. You would be amazed at the depth of the Tejon with 10x12 widescan coil. Mine hits a nickel at 14" in an air test...

I wish I could do that, unfortunately the cleansweep coil for vaqueros are extinct.

Do you have a link to that announcement? They are listed as for sale on Tesoro's website right now, and all kinds of dealers.

Cleansweeps were out of production until shortly after the first of the year. They changed the design slightly and Tesoro may have starved the market in order to make sure that no dealers got "stuck" with the older version the coil.

Since I was in the market for the 5-pin version, I have no first hand knowledge about the HOT technology variety.

There in stock, I had been checking and couldn't find them, and heard they were out of production fr the vaq. Made a post asking when they would come back in, no one replied.

Since asking wasn't working I assumed if I posted they were done someone wouldn't be ale to resist correcting me if I was wrong. ;)

I rechecked and you are right, apparently they are back in stock :cheer:

I sold my cleansweep to a guy in Australia. He wanted it some kind of bad. I never could get more than 5" on anything with it on my Cibola. I am sure I should have sent it in for a re-tune to match the coil. Since I didn't hunt with it all the time, unless I'm missing something, seemed kinda pricey to re-tune it every time you switch coils.

It only gets 5". That is how it should work.

In fact, that is how I want it work. I use it in combination with a pistol probe, which coincidentally has 4-5" range on targets.

The coil is designed for rapid ground coverage at a shallow depth. It is a clad monster and good at hitting jewelry.

I was between the cleansweep and the 10x12 widescan, I ended up with the 10x12 because of the crazy depth it gets, and only 2" less coverage than the cleansweep.
