This book was first published in 1989. It covers David Hackworth as a private in Italy at the very tail end of WWII, through Korea where he got a battlefield commission with other awards and through his time in Vietnam.
It is good reading for all, but especially veterans and of course Army veterans.
I was an enlisted man through my 3 year Army career. I had little to do with officers and felt that was a good way to stay out of trouble. Do my job as asked with no questions. My NCO's were my best guides and I listened to them.
This books give you a huge inside look at all the good and bad of being an combat officer in the Korean and Vietnam war and how screwed up the military was in a lot of cases. A very good read.
Almost forgot, it is 834 pages long so if you like these kind of books it is a long and enjoyable read.
ISBN:9780671695347 it is in most libraries since it was a best seller book in its heyday.
