1663 Cut Cob! (possible ID)

A friend of mine and I have put our heads together on this, and I'll post because if we don't have it, I feel we are very close.... and it's good news, because it's originally what you wanted, only a little more interesting.

I now think it is a cut piece of an 8 Reales cob, only in addition to that, it's countermarked with a 600 Brazilian or Portuguese stamp as seen in the picture I'm attaching to this message. What threw me off from the start was all the dots, but now what I believe they are is the beaded edge of the cob, and it's double struck. That's why there is a set of three on the side.

I was pretty sure it would be an interesting coin, and that it certainly is.

Awesome ID!

That sure is incredible!
The two "zeroes" did not look quite right to me, as far as a date goes.
What year do you think it could be?

Not sure if anyone would be able to date the cob as there's not much to go on, but when a coin is countermarked generally the emphasis is on that. In this case my friend just sent me a message saying the 600 mark likely dropped it to a value of 7.5 Reales, so what this clearly tells us is it was stamped as a full coin, and then cut later on.

So looks like it was countermarked and circulated as a Brazil 600 Reis, until it made it to North America, or was cut.

Amazing! Interesting history and a great find!

Here is one I found on an auction site that is quite close to yours!

My other computer crashed and option to reset my password didn't work. I've recently been contacted to fix it, just haven't got around to it yet.

Nice find!!!! been looking in my ... Standard catalog of world coins Spain,Portugal and the new world.... coin book and havent been able to ID it yet. There were only a few spanish ruled countries in the west that made coins in the 1600s and I cannot find a match. I will put some more time in this eve and hopefully I can help. lots of looking real close. Still an awesome find. HH 401K

Wow! 401k thank you for your time and energy. I have been studying the photo and the coin under a loop and I think you nailed it! All of the "dots" line up and from the very beginning my friend said he thought he saw a faint 5. So nice to have a time frame! Still relishing this sweet fine thanks everyone on here for helping me figure this one out! HH and dig it all

Glad to help! I was awed at how close the post have been without this kind of info. Great job. What really nails it is the rows of bumps because those are not as common being like that as the other more common coins unlike that plus a few straight runs in the places I didn't see elsewhere. A hole lot of them to look at not sure if I missed something. I dug a few in 40 years but I'd melt mine down compared to that awesome find. Follow the trail and I hope you find more. HH 401K
