1-10-2014 Finds at Camp site

Sweet merc! Are giving everything to the museum permanently?

Yeah Donneybrook. Kingdom and I might make us a display with one of each bullet, but everything else will go to the museum. This is part of our County's history and should be available for everyone. Kingdom and I just feel fortunate to be able to dig and document this site. We worked a State site last year in the county and did the same thing and it has helped open up a lot of opportunities for us. More people are willing to let you hunt if they know you are sharing it with everyone. Don't think we would have been able to hunt this site otherwise, plus we have other sites that are now available that we are yet to get to that should be be very good sites.

You put the trime and merc in your sock though right? Lol

No, the Trime is associated with the Civil War history of this site and belongs with the collection on display, as would a gold coin should we find one, or anything else that would be considered "period." We have found nine coins at the site that do not relate to this period: 2 Mercs, War Nickel, Buffalo nickel, Washington quarter, and 4 Jefferson nickels. The museum probably isn't interested in these.

We have hunted what woods we could that separate the fields, but yeah, some spots are just too thick to get through. One of the better spots in the woods is full of old swing sets and other junk. There is a good mowed field that joins the site that we do not yet have permission to hunt. In fact, it may be the best of all the fields. We are working on trying to get permission.

I figured there was a reason why you hadn't plotted many finds from the woody areas. Good luck on that other field. Hopefully, the owner sees what you are doing, and the work you are doing on the historical aspect of things (working with the local museum), and decides to "aid" you in this awesome project!

Well Steve we met with the landowners of the field we need to hunt that joins this site and it looks doubtful that we will get to hunt and document it any time soon. We talked with them for over an hour and they said "No" early in the conversation. However, the wife said they had willed the land over to their youngest son and she would talk to him. We told her the research was the most important part. Even offered to turn over all artifacts to the family. Hopefully with time to think about it they will realize they are standing in the way of historical research and change their mind. We didn't press any further and talked about local history for some time and then left them a business card and thanked them for talking with us. I personally know one of their sons and will give it a week and then try to talk to him. We have a lot of other locations that are connected to Civil War activities in our area to work on in the meantime. Maybe in time it will work out. Patience is the key here. Got my fingers crossed. Thanks for your interest in our work. Good luck in your hunts. I look forward to seeing posts of your finds.

That's too bad that it's a "no." So far. Sounds like there may be some wiggle room in there, especially after you talked with them for awhile. I'm interested to hear if they change their minds...

In the mean time, it sounds like you have PLENTY to keep you busy!
