The weather was wonderful here on Sunday, but I was too busy with family stuff to get out for any detecting during the day. But since the skies were clear and the moon was full, I decided to take the opportunity and squeeze in a night hunt at the farmer's field/ghost town I've been spending most of my detecting time on this season. It was after sunset by the time the girls were in bed and I could sneak out, and the moon was well up and by the time I made it onto the site.

I've only detected at night a couple times, and all just this year - I've gotta admit, my eyes are showing their age! I really struggled on those previous night hunts - every time I popped on the machine's backlight, or even the LED on the pinpointer, my dark adaptation went back to square one, so I felt like I was constantly stumbling around half-blind! Old eyes just take longer to re-adapt - just ask my poor dog how many times I've tripped over him while trying to cross the bedroom to get into bed just after shutting out the lights lately

Anyways, no such problems with that big, gorgeous full moon! The temperature dropped fast as the night got later, but I sure could see like it was practically daylight ;) And that beautiful silvery moonlight transferred over to my finds, too - among several keepers was a nicely detailed 1905 Barber dime! Also pulled out a "Princess Pat" rouge compact lid most likely from the 1930s, and an interesting old Carhartt button. Not sure on it's age, but all of the similar examples I've found all have "Overalls" abbreviated as "O'ALLS"...this one has it spelled out completely.

The other interesting find is what seems like a token with an odd "sunburst" or "gear" shape. I haven't found anything yet that makes sense for F.E.C. that would fit the timeframe for the location, and don't know how the "181" relates either.

Looks like I'm gonna be circling the full moon dates on the calendar from now on and crossing my fingers for clear skies!

The item you found with the initials F.E.C. And has the gear shape to it is actually a bale seal. My understanding is that they were used to seal the bags of grain and other items should have a small wire or rope that went to the center. It is made out of lead and they are crimped on. I have recently found a couple of those on the property that I took you to.

Solid hunting!!! Barber dime looks really nice! I hunt 98% of the time after the sun sets, you will adapt. I try to keep a low profile by using zero light or sound, but I hunt parks and ballfields mostly. Its surprising the stuff you see going on after the sun goes down, I've even witnessed a large gang brawl a couple hundred yards away from me  Private property is a completely different story. I have two little ones so I'm basically limited to hunting after they go to bed, rarely do I go during the day, just too much going on  keep up the good work! Happy hunting!

I Like this reply CD! Hunt dark and unnoticed! This is an Audio Primary Sport! A guy dont really need his eyes except to get to and fro...Its very comforting to hunt totally dark...Once a guy accepts this, they own the night...

Thanks a ton, Dan! You nailed it - and put me on course for what I think is a solid ID for the seal! There's a very high probability that the seal is from the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway - once I knew what to call it, a Google search quickly returned photos of the same items found by a detectorist in Florida back in 2012: http://treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com/2012/09/. His first two blog posts on the page talk about the seal, but the pictures are in the second post, dated Sept 29. The FEC Railway name was first used in September 1895, so the timeframe fits nicely for the ghost town. The seal's style looks turn of the 20th century, and the town was known to have a rail depot...and apparently they took delivery of merchandise from as far afield as Florida  The writer of the blog seems to have been keen on finding out more about the seal, so I plan to email him and see if he ever turned up anything more on the significance of numbers on the back. I imagine it could be a weight, merchandise type/class, route code - who knows! At the very least, he might be interested to hear another one turned up in Ohio

Thanks cellr! I definitely feel you on the family commitments. My oldest is nine, youngest is almost 4, so the whole bedtime routine spans from about 7pm to almost 9pm - with the age gap, their bedtimes don't really coincide yet! I'm fortunate that my job allows me some time to go out during the day during the week, but my weekends are rarely my own. I'm definitely warming up to night hunting for opening up extra detecting time, especially on weekends - obviously won't work for private home permissions, but curb strips, farm field permissions, etc are perfect candidates.

Thanks, Mud! Very true about "audio primary"! Truth be told, I've learned a lot about the detector on those dark night hunts - since I found it was impossible to see past my display backlight and see what my coil was over on those deep dark nights, I gradually kept the backlight off more and more. Just flicked it on to confirm the TID numbers - I'm too much of a noob to cut the TID cord completely. Anyways, there are a few cool finds that I dug because the sound was interesting, but I might have passed on if I was focused on numbers. And I already notice that I'm not looking at the numbers nearly so much during the day following those night hunts.

Gotta disagree tho...

and eat. When I was growing up, my Dad used to always say "I've gotta see what I'm eating" as he turned on all the lights to eat a snack while we were watching a movie in a darkened living room...I always thought he was nuts, 'cuz I could see in the dark just fine then. Now that I'm older, I understand right where he was coming from...there's nothing more awkward than trying to eat a bowl of chocolate ice cream in a dark room. I suppose there's a multitude of applications for Dad's little pearl of wisdom, though...

Beautiful dime!!

Thanks Strat! I've only dug 3 Barbers total, but I think this one is the best shape of the 3...and the oldest

....and coyotes! Nothing stands my neck hair on end more than standing out in the middle of a farm field by myself and suddenly hearing a pack yipping over their latest kill, sounding close enough to hit them with a dirt plug if I threw it in the right direction!
