Alternative to E-Bay?

I just looked at ebid yes there is a lot of stuff there but very few bids.
In my specialty section there are over 80 coins all with absurdly high starting bids for problem and over graded coins.

I noticed that too but have seen the same on E-Bay in a few cases. I'm assuming that the number #2 rating for eBid is based on traffic so, if true, there should be a decent number of customers there. Perhaps selling there with the right product at a good price you could make a little money.

Ebid , and the other Ebay clones have very few people looking at them , in fact most people dont even know they exist. What that means is VERY limited chances of selling anything , and if it does sell it will almost always be for less than what you would get with Ebay. The more people looking the better chances of a sale and the more you will get for it. I would not even try the clones. I have had good success selling on craigslist , even though people usually browse regionally so it too will have a very limited number of eyes looking at it. You have to deal with the nuts and scammers , but usually good common sense lets you weed them out. Its not the best but its free. To sell and get the best possible price though , you need coverage and as many people looking as possible , unfortunately Ebay is really the only consideration for that reason.

This past year I really tried to make a go with ebay. I did something like 40 transactions (mostly selling) and have a 100% rating. Then they put this new policy in place where I would have to wait until the buyer received the item and posted a + feedback before Paypal would release the funds. After a couple of these I said forget it.

How easy would it be for a buyer to get my item, cry foul and never send it back but I'm out of luck because I don't get the cash? Plus, the fees (between ebay AND paypal) ended up being like 9% of the whole deal. That's highway robbery.

No more selling on ebay for me. I wasn't aware Amazon was an option. Might try them.

Between eBay and PayPal, it is now 15.7%. 9% for eBay and 6.75 for PayPal. I sell there all the time, you just have to roll the fees into your stating price. I like the fact that if there is a problem with a buyer ( and I have had my share ) I am protected.

Not sure where you get your rates because this is what I see for Paypal. 1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30 USD or 2.9% - 3.9% + $0.30

Plus, the ebay % usually drops after the first $50 so you can't really state a flat rate fee for everything.

ebay is your best bet and if you use paypal your protected ...........craigslist has a lot of scammers!

I thought this recently ... listed my items and they did sell, but I have a NEW complaint about FeeBay!

WATCH OUT! There are certain categories that when you list in them, eBay tells you what your maximum charge can be for shipping!!!!! I had 3 video games (in OEM packaging) I sold as a lot. It said I could only charge $4 for PRIORITY mail via USPS. Well, the flat rate boxes for USPS start at $5 and go up from there. So I packaged it myself (brown box) and went to the post office. I about flipped out. Shipping those three games in a box the exact size for them cost me $11.57 I sold the items on eBay for $19 (shipping included in that total) I was completely enraged.

It's ridiculous! I've made good money on eBay, but it is to the point where it's becoming too much of a hassle. I am still tampering with my idea of a consignment store online. Just not sure of the logistics of it yet. LOL

You could have sent those three video games MEDIAL MAIL with Delivery Confirmation...Printing the shipping label online it would probably have been around $4.00 total

All these things come with experience..

How did you do with ePier Dusty? They have much traffic?

The last time I checked, their # of members was way up. I never had a problem with payments, even though they wouldn't take ebay. I'm sure some things have changed, it's been 4 years since I sold on there. Their fees were a small fraction of what ebay charged.........

Ebay is all about volume and what type of seller or store setup you have...

A middle level store costs $50 a month, but it is only 5 cents for fixed price listings...
The final sales fee is 12% on fixed price listings at that level and Paypal runs usually aabout another 3%..The more businesss you do, then you can jump into discount levels..
I try and figure my cost of doing business at around 20%, considering other expenses related to the sale..

This my friends is called the COST OF DOING BUSINESS....

If you opened a brick and mortar store well you can bet you are going to have atleast the same expense to sell...

I have over 25,000 transactions on Ebay and I truly hate the site anymore...

But they are still the major player and if you want cash flow, well then this is where you sell..

People come to E-Bay looking for yard sale prices and if you are kicking out 20% it is gonna be hard to price something to sell.

Is it only for certain categories that E-Bay limits shipping fees?

I prefer to ship via Priority Mail to ensure it is there within 3-4 days. Media mail in general for where I live takes forever to get to locations. Upwards of 10 days (excluding weekends). I used to ship all the time but it's been years ago, just can't believe it's changed that much.

Quit Ebay 3 years ago

I quit buying on ebay in 2008 and stopped selling on eBay in 2009. I used to sell items on eBay until I finally stopped selling on Ebay. Since that my last eBay auction,Ebay instituted new rules including must use Paypal and no more paper payments such like money orders. Now Ebay is raising fees on both PP and eBay. These changes made me quit eBay for real good. Ebay is no longer auction to enjoy bidding. Ebay used to be more fun a decade ago. Now no fun on ebay!!!!

The discontent with E-Bay seems pretty widespread, not just here. You would think that with so many other sellers, and buyers, some other site would start filling the hole E-Bay use to occupy.

I have a question that someone here can probably answer. Years back I did sell a bit on E-Bay and, back then payment was simply a money order or even a personal check. Paypal is the preferred method now and I do have a personal paypal account that I recently set-up and have been using to make purchases. Can I accept payments with a personal account or would I need to upgrade? I’ve checked a bit on the net and as is so often the case found conflicting information. The best info I have been able to find is that yes, but that the person sending payment cannot pay directly from a credit or debit card but only from funds in the paypal account. Anyone know for certain?

You have to have a PayPal account that accepts credit card payments to sell on eBay. I did not know they were even still doing the personal accounts. You can still accept payment via check or MO on eBay you are just not allowed to advertise it the buyer has to offer. Other countries such as Australia have forced eBay to back down on their PayPal only policy claiming monopoly. So far it has not happened here in the USA

Most times when people post about Ebay it's to say something negative, and that includes the whole thing about users being pressured to use Paypal. Well let me give you another perspective, because to me it's great! When someone has an online business, especially if they're buying is also online, why the heck would you want things to be delayed by snail mail. Years ago I had to run to the bank all the time to buy money orders, then wait sometimes upwards to a month before the payment could arrive to an International destination, and the item be delivered. Now things happen fast. I was also very against the DSR ratings too, but only until I realized good sellers have very little problems and people are motivated to ship fast. Both Paypal and DSR are hated by many but they sure work for me and I wouldn't change anything if I could. I make more money because of these changes.

Good thoughts Iron Patch and I have to agree. I've bought several things off of E-Bay with my new paypal account and it is much easier than running out for a money order or sending a check and waiting for it to clear. In every case I paid for the items right away and they were shipped very quickly. It is also much safer, in my opinion, to use paypal rather than a credit or debit card.

Oh, to ADD to this negative discussion, eBay I can 'list' items for free up to like 50 free listings a month as long as they are within their rules.

BUT I noticed my fees at the end were outrageous. I owe 30$ this month for a few items I have sold. Turns out, eBay charges a final value fee (price auction ends at) AND implemented a SHIPPING FEE! The shipping fees are about 75% of what the final value fee is! Absolutely ridiculous!
