Apex Reveal thoughts

I'll be interested to see if the Hoover boys may have been testing the Apex any or if they will be using them soon.
I do like the looks of it, and wish it had been a higher end machine. Had it been a flagship detector I would have been tempted to preorder. Presently I'm not even in need of a new machine. My Nox 800 is my main detector and I have two others I very seldom use as it is, and they are not cheap machines. I guess down deep I would like to have a Garrett, but I guess I will have to wait.

I would say 90% or more of detectorist dont actually need waterproof even if they think they do.
I tend to agree with you on this matter. Waterproof can be useful or handy, but isn't a must-have' for most people. I have 8 or 9 detectors in my outfit, but only the Simplex + is waterproof. I like the package so enjoy it even thought I mainly land hunt.

I think the APEX is going to sell well, even it it isn't a waterproofed model.

Nope. Garrett placed and priced it perfectly. Its price and features fit in right between vanquish 540 and Equinox 600.

Like Minelab, they just killed sales of there higher priced detectors. Probably not as much as Minelab did since they arent 2 to 3 times the cost. I would say 90% or more of detectorist dont actually need waterproof even if they think they do.

Assuming those numbers are correct, that doesn't factor the "insurance" waterproofing can provide. Who knows when it might start raining or an impromptu trip to a river, lake or beach can arise.

"It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it." Of course, I acknowledge that all else being equal, waterproofing can add a small amount of weight and a notable amount of cost to a machine. These are prices I'm personally willing to pay for the insurance and increased machine capabilities.

Another reason I want waterproofing is that it can potentially provide better protection from the dust or dirt and make the machine easier to clean if it gets dirty.

This is so disappointing to me, I was hoping garrett had a new flagship on their hands or at least something to compete with the equinox. My warranty finally ran out on my ctx and I need another multifreqency machine I can take in the water, guess that is the equinox.
I wanted to support a us company but not making the machine waterproof is like buying a new corvette with crappy tires... Don't understand this decision unless its to make a new future model that is waterproof and add cost

This is most likely the case. Do you really think that with this release, the AT Max will remain the flagship model for Garrett? The only question is when the "AT Apex" will be released and for how much.

It's just like the equinox only 2 years late and not waterproof!! Lol good work Garrett. Always a day late and a dollar short.

Looks like a nice, well designed and well thought out detector. If it hunts deep they will sell a huge number of the Apex. Glad to see made in USA on there too.

If they had released a new 700-800 dollar waterproof, wireless headphone, multi frequency machine they would have killed the three current AT detectors and still had to watch the ACE 300/400 fall behind the competition. So, they pulled together a detector to fit between them and pull in customers from several directions, including those considering a Simplex, Vanquish or many other detectors in that general price range, including those considering the ACE 400.

I would guess the AT series is mostly paid for, and Garrett still sees a strong enough customer base for a powerful, rugged, straight-forward, waterproof, made in the USA, coin and relic sniffing machine. They can milk that cow a little while longer.

If they can't come up with anything groundbreaking within a year, then they've left themselves an opening to release a 750 dollar waterproof Apex with a few added user adjustable parameters.

Garrett's next higher end machine will be the waterproof ATM. M for multi frequency.
It will have descriptive audio like the ATPro
It will be deep
It will cost more.
However it won't Trump the Equinox.

No, no, no.....I've got it.....the "AT Flex" will be the flagship AT (waterproof) detector with their Multi-Flex technology.

(Hey Garrett marketing team, I'll take a free AT Flex when it's released in exchange for using the name.)

As for the audio of the Ace Apex, I couldn't tell too much from their videos other than it has 5 tones and buzz-grunt tonal characteristics similar to an AT Max.

They talked about 5 tone audio (and demonstrated it) and then talked about "binary audio similar to the ACE series" but with proportional audio. Binary audio is what Garrett calls the Standard Audio option on an AT Pro for those who find the Pro audio overwhelming/annoying.

Without a manual available online yet, it seems like the Apex has the option of a simpler binary audio mode (but now with proportional audio) as well as a new five tone audio (also with proportional) that sounds a bit like the At Max. They could have explained those features better.

That's a bold statement! And an interesting use of capitalization, too.

I got dibs on the names, "Apex Pro," "Apex Max," "Apex Gold," and "Apex SeaHunter Mk III."

I think the fact that Garrett didn't try to replace the at pro or max with a newer better version says alot. If Garrett AT series sales were hurting from any other company I think Garrett would have addressed the AT series.
But they didn't.They adresss the Ace series..And did a great job imo.. So alot of this long winded speculation going on is really not on point at all.. Lots of great machines out from all different brands, if the apex isn't a fit for everyone that's ok, everybody has different needs.

Interesting points.

I wonder if they released the Apex to bolster the Ace series because was hurting the most against the Simplex and Vanquish.

As for the AT series, Garrett is waiting for Minelab to play its hand when/if Minelab releases the "Equinox 1000" (or maybe it'll be the Equinox 600 and 800 with Multi-IQ v2) or something later this year.

Once they know what they're going up against, Garrett adjusts some features (or price) of the "Apex Pro" and releases it soon after.

This new detector will be the main seller of any in the Garrett line. Bye Bye to the AT series and the Ace series. But they could of had a real contender if it was waterproof. Beach hunters will pass.

It lacks the higher freqs used in the Vanquish, Nox and Deus that folk here love, so I'd say it won't be as popular in the UK and EU at the price mentioned.

Minelab has played their hand and blew everything into the weeds of obsolescence!

Multiple frequency is cool and all but I rarely hunt salt water. I have found more stuff with a single frequency detector. I got a vanquish as a backup it works well but
I don’t see it really doing better than my single frequency detectors. Especially after I am familiar with the nuances of the detector.
