Why leave? You were in your rights. It just reinforced the BS.
Thats the thing.... We didnt leave. We continued to hit the school yard as old salty a** watched knowing the sheriff didnt kick us out..

Didn't you leave the area you were detecting at the time?
One time a buddy and I were doing a park at about 4:45pm . A city-employee landscaper drove up to us , in his landscaper golf cart thing. And said : "Not allowed here". I told him that I'd detected the park for years up-till-that time, and knew of no rule that said that. He said that it was a new thing , that his boss had told the rank & file workers, to "BOL for md'rs". And then went on to suggest that it had something to do with holes someone else had been leaving (supposedly).
When my friend and I heard "holes", we gleefully told the fellow that we'd been there an hour already, and dug no less than 8 or 9 old coins in this exact area. And said "As you can see, you can't even tell where we were".
The landscaper looked around at the ground . And agreed that we were not leaving any marks. However, he was simply passing on what his boss had told him was a new policy. Then ... with a sly grin ... said "I don't care what you do when I'm off work. But as long as I'm here, I'm just passing on what I was told ". So we asked: "What time do you get off work ?", He said "5pm".
We saw that it was 4:50pm. So we went to a picnic table and sat down for a 10 minute break. Sure enough, at 5pm, we could see him in the distance locking up his tool shed, getting in his city vehicle, and driving away. Whereupon we resumed hunting.
That was 15+ yrs. ago. And ... to this day, you can hunt there and not be bothered.
This is an example of how not every "scram" constitutes a supposed law or rule that you must now fight or get clarified, etc....
The only problem that I ever had was at a school that I had been detecting for about thirty years without a problem. i was detecting during the summer when school was not in session. A security guard came driving his SUV across the playground. He said "You can't detect here! Some kid might fall in a hole and break a leg!" I told him that I always fill my holes and showed him one that I had dug. He looked at it and said he didn't care if I detected but I couldn't dig. I think he was new because I never seen him before or since. I decided to hunt the park next to the school instead. The coins from the school yard are never in good condition anyway.
Give a little get a lot. A gravel one. I think it was handled to everyone’s satisfaction very well. Uh, except for the complainer’s lol!
Briefly, while ol john law was there, but he told me he wasnt going to sit and watch and wait for me to go back. I hit the gravel area for a few while he was eaving, telling the bus driver I was allowed to be there, then i went about hunting where I wanted to. Bus Driver knew the Sherff wasn't going to kick us out so he got to sit there and watch knowing calling the sheriff didmt do him a lick of good....
I had it out with a bus driver yesterday while hunting an old school yard. The school has been there for a century, and its still used today, but the playgrounds have moved and some of the buildings changed. Anyways, While I was kneeling down digging a plug, a bus driver stopped the bus and got out and started yelling at me and Amanda. Told us "Stop tearing up my field!! You cant be here!" Even tho the sign says public welcome, no one allowed after dark, enter at your own risk while school grounds are unsupervised. Normally, if someone comes out and asks me not to dig, Im more than happy to pack up and leave, but the way this man approached me and Amanda, in front of our kids was outright unacceptable. I told him "First of all, you need to stop yelling at us right now, second of all, this is public property, WE pay for out of our taxes, , I have kids that go here and I guarantee the kids playing out here every day cause more damage than I am with this tiny shovel" he then proceeded to yell at us some more about how we are ripping up the field and we needed to leave" Long story short I told him to find 4 holes that I dug knowing he wouldnt be able to because I fill EVERY SINGLE PLUG. He yells back "Ill just call the sheriff for destruction of property!" I laughed and went about my business while the kiddos were playing in the rocks, After about 20 more mins, sure enough here comes the Sheriff. He was nice enough, asked what was going on, told me You guys are correct, this is public property and your'e not breaking any laws. I dont see any damage, Hell I cant even find a hole!" So he went back and told the bus driver We had every right to be there and that the kids who go here cause more damage! LOL! After a few mins, he came saying the bus driver said its privately maintained property and that they could ask me to stop digging. Having 8 years in law enforcement, I knew it was BS, but because I could tel the sheriff was over the entire situation I agreed to stop digging in the field if I could continue hunting the gravel and dirt area. He was perfectly find with that and even went back to tell the bus driver that I was more than allowed to dig the areas outside the field. Turned out to be pretty good hunting grounds too! Found a couple bucks in clad and ring number 3 for the year~~
"I agreed to stop digging in the field if I could continue hunting the gravel and dirt area."
You lost.
Lol, Some battles just arent worth fighting. I suppose its just in my blood, or I refuse to let someone (especially and over zealous security guard or bus driver) tell me what I CANT do, especially when I'm well within my rights to be doing whatever it is i'm doing. Nope, I'm afraid I would have had to tell him how it is LOL
this is correct! " you lost!" as mentioned ,its a public place, and the cop
was in the right! hell's afire!..he went to bat for ya!
(h.h.!)
