etrac deep and fast settings

As long as we are all testing settings here is another one to check out. The HIGH trash setting helps the detector "see thru" to the best ACCEPTED target. BUT if I am running TTF with a wide open screen how does it help? All targets are accepted. If I am using NO discrimination how does it pick the best target. Just food for thought as we all test. Nothing else to do as it is so cold out.

You are correct about the high trash setting. If you have nothing disced out, it does nothing.

High trash on = strongest accepted target
high trash off = strongest target under the coil.

I feel the etrac has the most efficient adjustments required for performance. No silly adjustments like what color you want your nail icon to be? etc... So it baffles me as to why there is a target gain and deep adjustment if they work the same? I think they may "seem" to work the same but probably have subtle differences that only a lot of testing will settle. I admit in the beginning I didn't fully understand all the adjustments. I would adjust this or that and found myself just settling on turning the deep and fast on in the end. For 3 years I have been successful with the machine so why fix something that's not broken? I really just forgot about some of the settings since I was reaching deep targets. But now with a ton of hours under my belt it's time to dive into some settings in depth. (pun intended) I really look forward to getting back out as soon as the snow melts!

I run Fast OFF, Deep OFF and here's why:

1. Like some others have mentioned in here If you have Fast ON it will cut your signal short and give you LESS information IMO. When you're seeking extremely deep coins you want every bit of audio information you can get. Fast ON may be good in higher trash areas but for deep coins you shouldn't be hunting in high trash areas anyway.

2. I run Deep OFF because the Minelab manual even says that there is EXTRA FILTERING going on with Deep ON. Why would I want extra filtering when the purpose is to run as all metal mode as possible to get deep targets. Deep ON might help give a better target ID on the screen, but you should not be detecting by the screen numbers if you want deep coins. The pros who are digging 10" silver dimes are detecting by ear which is something you have to learn to do in order to find really deep coins.

Most all of my deep silver has come from trashy parks. It's just something I've gotten used to. I would love to find deep silver in a clean environment. Are you talking about Pro's hunting by ear alone without much or any discrimination? I don't personally think my etrac runs or sounds too good without some iron disc in there. This is running conductive/multi.

When I say hunt by ear I mean with low discrimination like the Andy S. pattern but definitely not all metal mode.

I get that. Andy S has the iron open down to about 19 or 20? That's close to where I run. I need to revisit the deep-fast on/off again as some question has arisen in my mind. I didn't see much difference when I was messing with those settings 3 years ago. But now with some more hours on the machine I might be able to see something now?

Actually I run my FE at about 26. Not sure what the Andy S. runs exactly but you will miss deep coins if you run it at 19 or 20. My sweet spot for a lot of really deep coins is 22 on the FE number in my soil conditions.

That's off that they use extra filtering, less filtering, as you said, generally = depth, however wouldn't more filtering speed up sweep speed? So running deep one should (by theory) allow you to increase your sweep speed?

If I filter my coffee twice it's smoother but it takes longer. How smooth do you want your coffee? 4 filters is real smooth but it really slows down the process (sweep speed) I personally don't mind some grounds in my teeth. What the heck did I just say.........I think it made sense?

More filtering would mean you need to sweep slower (the detectors processor is working harder). More filter means the detector will spend more time analyzing a single target. So if you run fast on and Deep on then I believe it's counterproductive really and they sort of counteract each other.

If I understand it right the etrac will try to analyze the target more with deep on, so it will give you a more accurate target ID reading on the screen. However, for really deep coins the audio signal is much more important than the target ID readings. I sweep very fast in low trash areas with the etrac and have pulled many silver dimes at a measured 9"-10" inches.

Yes great analogy

Yeah sorry, brain fart, I'm not sure what I was thinking. I think I was thinking of the V3i, the 5 band pass requires a slower sweep speed than say the 10 or 12, but that isn't the actual number of filters.

I was "trying" be funny. But I knew the more processes the slower the sweep. But like I've said before. I didn't notice much if any difference with deep on/off or fast on/off when I first got the machine. Maybe now I can? I know when I first started I had deep on and fast off. I was pretty successful running like this. Then I switched fast on /deep on and continued my success. I've said this before - you can screw up a lot of the etrac settings but the machine will not deny you deep copper or silver.

I have 28 down disced out.

Ya mine is 27 down, 26 is open but I think either is a good number. The only thing that will occasionally fool me is a super deep rusty nail that has a 90* bend in it

That and running high manual sensitivity can equal deep rusty nail. I get fooled even though I have my suspicions.....but I must dig
