How to pick the right curb strip for old coins

Don't know if it just my imagination or what, but a bunch of silver dollars have been turning up lately!! Huge CONGRATZ!!!

"I have had the police called on me probably close to 100 times now over the years. Not something I am proud of by any means, but it's the reality of this type of hunting"

I'm curious some of the comments the police have said to you? I'd think they'd have said no digging, etc. but would like to hear your comments.

Why would you assume they would tell him that?

How's this for a curbstrip winner! My first ever morgan!

I had to do a double-take since you had just shown a pic of those "example finds"! :wow:

Congrats on the cartwheel! There have been a lot of them found recently but it only matter when YOU find one! Awesome find, welcome to the silver dollar club!

Why would you assume they would tell him that?

Because I've been told or heard many falsehoods by police officers over the years, in many different situations - many times they'll say something to try and get out of the situation period, whether or not it is law (You can't be over here, you can't be over there, you should just...blah blah blah). I had a recent experience very similar to my assumption. That's why I asked.

I've never been asked to leave by the police. They all say the same thing "it's city property, we can't kick him off of it" One asked me if I would like to move on because the lady was so riled up he thought she was going to stroke out and I obliged at that point because I too thought I was going to see her fade to black.

Now if I am in Port Townsend the police just drive by and wave if they get a call. They know I am not going to step over the line and don't really care what I do anymore. Some stop to see if I've gotten anything on their "wish list"

My oldest copper coin ever came from a curb strip, 1746 KG copper 4 inches deep! I have found tons of silver from curb strips, love em!

Woo! That's the business right there! I need to head over to my friends in Philly for a week or so next year so I can try and nock out some coppers. One of my highest bucket list finds is a LC, I'd flip over a KG copper!

Lol! The LAST thing I thought I would find... super silly

Police dont always know who owns the curb strip , its possible some may not care to check on it either. In some areas they are owned by the home/land owner from what Ive read , so its worth checking beforehand. And I would check with the city instead of the police , that way you are sure to get valid information and no risk of getting told an opinion or best guess by the police department.

A few months ago I was detecting the curb strip where they were tearing out the sidewalks and redoing them. As Im walking along a guy standing in his garage asks me if I found anything and I told him " not yet". He says "thats my peoperty out there you know , I am ok with you doing that on my property as long as you split anything you find with me" ,.....and he wasnt joking , serious as can be. I didnt want to get into an arguement with the guy and I didnt find anything there anyway so I just laughed and moved along , since I checked the county auditors maps beforehand and seen he only owns to the sidewalk , the strip is city property. I could have stood my ground but what was the point , plenty more area to hunt.

You are 100% correct. I have only encountered this phenomenon once in my career and the lady was VERY pleasent. She didn't want me to do the strip of hers, but gave me permission to do her 1800's mansion a mile up the road. The county auditors is very much where you should start your search. Thank you.

I have definitely hit some pipes... Some have been old, some have been new PVC pipe, some have been old clay water pipes that are defunct, I have even seen an old wooden water pipe in a street tear out.

I however have NO idea WHAT kind of pipes these are. As soon as i get to one I ALWAYS cover up and call it good on that target. It's not worth paying the city to fix a water leak or a home owner for repairing the sprinkler system they installed on the strip. One thing to remember is that the pipes all run 1 direction (for the most part until they get uner the street), so if you have already found it, chances are you are safe right to left. Remember to still be cautious because some sprinkler systems sound like a quarter on the surface right up against the curb on both sides usually 6-12 ft spacing I've noticed.

Not all curb strips have pipes and RARELY do I chase a signal that deep, but I have come across some shotty work that was too shallow on more than one occasion

One thing to keep in mind, the main lines will run parallel to the street. Water mains, gas mains, sewers, electrical lines and cable. But all houses, churches, businesses etc will have service lines that tap off the mains. They would usually be deep enough that you don't have to worry but not always. These lines when replaced are often bored and can be any depth. I would pay close attention to roads with street lights. These lines are very shallow at times and the older ones are three wires braided together with no casing therefore your lesche would go right through. Always look around for old markings from utility locating companies. They will flag or spray paint where these lines are located. The flags and paint are color coded, blue=water, yellow=gas, green or brown= sewer, orange=cable. Be aware of your surrounding and good luck hunting!

well in my last curb strip hunt just b4 this snow hit it was almost dark and i was still searching. a guy came up to me and asked if i found anything good. i replied jst a penny and a bunch of trash. then he told me it's his property and he is okey me being there as long i will info him anything i found "with value" coz not long ago he found a morgan silver dollar while tearing up his old house. in case like this i know he doest own the curb coz i check the city first and asked couple of people/home owner about curb strip and they said its the city who owns it but the owner is oblige to maintain it like mowing/snow removal.
by having pleasant conversation with this person he not only give me permission to his yard but also that house he is tearing up! even showed me inside (its a potential coz 1880s) and told me WHY THE CURB when HIS YARD is wide...see, if i didnt handle myself better and being confrontational. who knows what would happen not ony that im pretty sure i will have the boot.
i think it all goes to how people approch us. if they look upset already b4 they ask u anything i think for me it's worth to just move along and a simple "sorry mam/sir if i disturb you" and move on to the next site than confront the person.
your couple finds aint worth the trouble i think.

Had trouble reading your post (spelling and grammar), but overall, I agree that it is always important how you conduct yourself:yes:

 So far (knock on wood) people have been pretty decent to me. I can have a hair trigger and worry about when someone gets lippy about it though because that's when I would get confrontational. (I'm working on that though  ) I can't stop lookin at that coin Swing! You too huh?

The thing is insane bro... so big and heavy...

Where I am pointing is where the Morgan was. There is no grass on the curb where that bumper of the car is all the way down. Just what you see in the picture. Very small section.

Yesterday I didn't even have a chance to get confrontational. Saw a lady watching me through her window and not 10 minutes later an officer rolls up and said he got a call from someone saying I was tearin up their lawn. He immediately said there was no issue and it is the "city right of way" as long as the city doesn't care I am here (which they dont) and then proceded to want to know if I found anything good. I got to show him the Morgan which led to me showing him the rest of my cup. He was thrilled. 10 minutes later we shook hands and he drove off. After the officer left and I went back to doing what I was doing I could hear the lady yelling at her husband about it. He came out to the porch, then front yard, then back inside. He never confronted me about it, but I knew they were the ones that called. I laughed because if they only took the 5 minutes to see what I was about they would have had an explanation, but since they didn't come out when the officer was here they never got an explanation as to how I was left to MD even though the cops came and I spent 15 minutes with them. Only found 4 wheats though for my efforts, but my small victory was like finding 3 of those morgans in one plug

the times you have been 'questioned' by the police-- are you having to give your name/show ID?
