I have to ask!

Say what??? What does having a CTX have to do with anything??? I don't get it? There are a million guys here that smoke anything I find with all different kinds of detectors. I"m not better than anybody I'm a noob to detecting and just trying to be friendly and ask a simple question, I did not mean any harm sheeeeez. I thought we all had the same passion of detecting and shared the same views MY BAD

Dude take a chill, see the grin face? He was kidding!

Was only kidding... hence the :D at the end

I'm a professional pot stirrer.

Sorry. ;)

I could think of a bunch of other stuff I would rather do and make the same amount of money with way less work involved if I were to do this as a full time job, let's say with 40 hrs a week. You would have to at least average 1 gold a day and most likely 2 or 3 depending on size just to make a decent income. I don't think I would be able to lift my arms during the weekend if I hunted that much haha.

It took me 2 years to find ONE GOLD RING… and I live in a heavily visited tourist beach town.

Meanwhile I'm out $4000 in equipment.

At first glance It does appear that gold is falling into the scoops on this branch of the forum…

One gold 14K band at 6-8g would bring in under $200.
pretty meager "living".

Grass is always greener….

I agree with some of your post but disagree with another :D

I never think of being "out" in equipment costs that makes it sound like work instead of a hobby.. ;) I never feel that when I purchase something... its a hobby.

Years past I could easily find 50 gold rings in a season and did it quite a few times... times have changed.. there are a lot more beach hunters now then there was when I started.. plus at least in my area with the building of jetties sand that moves in tends to stay and we have few fresh drops here on our beaches like in the southern climes... saying that I know the beaches I hunt still have hundreds of gold finds out there... we wait and watch for changes to the beaches...

Last year was a good example... in 10 years of hunting a local beach I had pulled 1 gold from wet sand and 2 from the water... after superstorm Sandy I pulled 17 gold in a few weeks from it... it was like that at most of the places I hunted last year... the water was full of deep sand with light targets but the slopes were ground down with gold and silver to give

FWIW it ain't that easy:lol:. I need to find about 20 gold to pay for gas for the year for detecting driving to beaches. Right now for the year I'm at one eyeball gold find at 6 bucks:lol:. The dirt fishers are kicking my arse on gold, and I own an AT pro, 2 sov gt's CTX, 2 DFX's, V3i, Excalibur, BHID 300.

Well that explains everything, you need a couple more machines. :heartylaugh:

Craig, don't come on here and say something stupid like, " look who's talking ".

I'm tied with you now... yesterday I went to Walmart and spotted a 14k white and yellow gold earring  I thought it was a ring when I first saw it. If I run my coil over it does it count?

Glad we call it a hobby:lol: Used to own 7 cars and 4 boats. Some of the boats are now metal detectors:laughing:

What you talking bout Willis? Don't make me come up there and seed your beaches

I'm not in a good mood... my big snowstorm has turned into a flop  Weather forecasters should find a real profession because they suck at what they do

I wouldn't count it out yet, Dutchess may still be a money maker.

Most people only post when they find gold or silver... you won't hear about my last 5 hunts that I didn't find either.

Some people live in very good locations (usually outside of the US mainland) and they pull gold almost every hunt, but that isn't the norm.

This is true. I'm in a good location and I still don't find gold every hunt. Like last night!:lol: I sell a lot of my stuff online and it supplements my wage but I couldn't live off it.

Some of the beach hunters should post some photos of all the trash they find in this tread. :)

 I already posted a while back I had to get a second trashcan. As it is I have to make sure the trashcan doesn't exceed the limit for weight. I started throwing some of my trash in the cans at the beach. Takes a real big trash pouch beach hunting. otherwise your pants will wind up around your ankles:laughing:

no way, no how,,,,,,anyone saying they are making a living doing this finding gold/plat is lying or stealing the stuff,,,,there may be times when you hit a hot spell and have 3 or 4 golds in a week, which is 400 to 600 bucks, but there are times when you have a cold spell and don't find gold for a few weeks, and that is hunting almost every day,,,,,even when you count the keepers with diamonds,,,,,unless it is over a half carrot it aint worth much and those are few and far between,,,,,,,it is fun finding the stuff and the excitement of seeing gold in the scoop,,,,,,I have done I think every hobby there is and this one has me addicted more than any hobby I ever had before,,,,don't quit your day job and buy an excal or CZ:laughing:GL HH

From what I've read it seems that a lot of us prefer water hunting over dirt fishing because we tend to find more gold at beaches and lakes (rivers too!).
That "more" can be a couple of gold rings a year or 100 gold rings a year but like was mentioned; location, conditions, equipment, experience, persistence and...luck have everything to do with it.
I used to hunt the dirt all the time but now that my hunting time is limited I usually go where my chance of finding gold are the greatest- near or in the water. Like others, I am guilty of not posting pictures when I don't find much -and it happens a lot. Some people think that I find a lot of gold. I don't think so but everything is relative. I have 3 gold rings this year but I've been stuck on 3 since about the third week of January. Now those guys in Asia...they all find about 50 gold rings a month!

Like I have said before, these beach hunters have my respect. I don't think I would last long getting pounded in the serf and lifting a sand filled scoop for hours on end.
They definitely earn what they find!

Haven't found any gold since November :( and I live 5 minutes from the beach here in south florida. Few silvers and odd ends but that's it. So in my opinion, I wouldn't try and live off this hobby. Maybe if you lived in the Caribbean :P I could see it being possibly.

My personal best was a 4 ring day...

In 8 hours of walking and covering easily a mile or two of beach walking between the cuts I had scouted out from the dry sand walking from the parking area to the far end of my hunting spot.

I got 1 Black Titanium, 1 Silver 925 Toe Ring, 1 10K Gold, and 1 Junker. But I also made a cool $100.00 from a guy with probably five grand in jewelry on him for stopping what I was doing and coming to find his wife's wedding ring. That hundred was probably a 10% recovery fee from the looks of the ring. He insisted and I figured he could afford it so I didn't argue with him. Took me about 35 minutes of hunting.

I also got about $8 in loose change that day.

Here's a more typical day out...

This is the ring results for one year at one beach I frequent with about 20 or 30 other local and tourist detectorists... so, HUNT ON and Good Luck!!!
