It looks a lot like a pinball machine coil plunger.
But you said it's not magnetic so it isn't.
Definitely similar in appearance though.

I cleaned the end and it is just a slight indentation, not a hole. I appreciate the efforts. Usually my dad knows, now we are both curious!

1908 big house with large lot. Bay area, CA. Found an old cobbler's hammer head, too.

I don't think that ALL stainless steels are magnetic. Possibly it is one of the non-magnetic forms? It looks like stainless steel to me.

yup correct, not a strong force with some stainless. Unless you use very strong magnet.

Even non magnetic stainless still shows some when a rare earth magnet is involved, especially when one is hanging by a string.. At least from everything I've seen..

I think my friend figured it out. Needle roller from a 60 series Datsun transmission.

I don’t think it’s a needle roller. There is a head on it with a bigger diameter then the shaft and in order to be a roller it would have to have the all the same diameter top to bottom. On top of that is like 1/2” thick so the bearing would have been like 4” to 6” in diameter.
