Spade for a budget??

Tried searching with key word "budget".

Right now, I can't afford a $120 digging instrument. Was wondering if anyone has tried this model, or something very similiar.

I just bought this one but ive only used it for a couple hunts... seems to work great compared to a standard shovel

I like this digger also:

But keep in mind, im new and frugal

I've had this out on a couple woods hunts. Works well, feels plenty solid as a shovel and a walking stick...Lifetime guarantee. American company out of Michigan. Quality is there and the steel feels good. Unfortunately it's Chinese built. I put a little more edge on the blade and it does what it's supposed to in root-laden areas. Sure would be nice to see it come from Michigan for another $10 even. :(

Not super crazy about the shape of the ball style handle, but I like the ball style more than I thought I would after having a D handled Samson. Definitely like the bigger blade for the woods. For the $40, I'd say it's a good option on a budget.

YMMV,

Check out Whites new Ground Hawg. I keep them in stock and are GREAT DIGGERS at an affordable price. Here is the link :

+1 on the ground hawg or a T handle Sampson,
Yes they are twice the $$ but just look at the differences in construction,
you'll only buy it once, how many seasons do you think the cheaper one will last?
I'm guessing 1 if your lucky but that's just my opinion, Good luck and HH!

I agree with Dirt Lizard. I picked one of these up on Amazon for the versatility but I have a Garret tool for the yards.

I bought a similar drain spade from Harbor Freight. It was super cheap. I used a cut off wheel on my grinder and shortened the blade as well as adding teeth to one side. It has worked great so far. One full season in and zero problems.

Something like this was my first shovel. My was from Menards, fiberglass over steel tube. Mine is a mastercraft name but is made in the USA. It's about 1-2 inches wider and I cut it down to about 1-2" longer.

Actually if I do any field hunting I grab it first, it works awesome. But heavier than my sampson

BUT PLEASE DON'T use in a park.

Depending on where you dig, and how hard the soil is, it would be fine in crop fields, and anywhere unless soil was hardpacked.

I bought a trenching shovel, longer handle, but blade is considerably heavier. I shortened the handle, added a D-handle, and ended-up cutting the blade and rewelding it to a slightly straighter angle. It's basically an indestructible shovel now.
