Whats this stone?

I'd hold with your original guess LJS, and up the ante to a variation on a star sapphire, which don't alway have to present as a perfect star. Lighter shaded natural sapphires will often change color depending on the angle of light. I use a known sapphire ring to calibrate my cheap diamond tester which goes up 8-9 bars out of twelve for sapphires. In any event a great find,,, Good on you! So, I think I have the answer and cat's eye was close though not all chrysoberyl stones display the cat's eye effect and not all cat's eye stones are chrysoberyl. Usually cat's eye is made from feldspar minerals which are soft at a mohs of 6.

Chrysoberyl

Look at the page a couple are similar but what bugs me is the milky looking part of it... I think maybe a gem dealer could give his thoughts...
