1837 Hard Times token

While md'ing in a local schoolyard today, I unearthed an extremely corroded copper coin. My first impression was a large cent. However, after some gentle washing with warm soapy water, I realized it was a 1837 Hard Times "Illustrious Predecessor Executive Experiment" Token. Its in really rough shape. Does anyone have ideas/ recommendations about how I can clean up this unusual find and bring out more of this token's details?

Got a pic? It would help in determining the best approach. Generally I pick the dirt off with a toothpick but it depends on the situation. Congrats on the coin, hard times tokens are a sweet find.

Thanks SalemScott. I was very surprised when it popped out of the hole. I wasn't expecting to find such an old coin in a school ball field.The token is in pretty rough shape. Most details are obscured. I could make out just enough letters around the rim to make a positive identification. I'll snap a picture and post it. I'd be very interested in your thoughts.
