cleaning and saving iron...?

i've found some iron tools from pre-civil war days. after cleaning the dirt and most of the rust, they're starting to rust badly again. i put motor oil on them after cleaning as it helps with some types of metal. any other ideas?

here is some stuff I have used in the past. Its called Rust Converto. Its a polymer that soaks into the rust turning it black, but it will stop the rust from spreading. Here is a web site for it.

To fully stop future problems you have to remove the chlorides in the metal.
To do this boil the item in a 5% solution of caustic soda preferably dissolved in distilled water. Repeat a few times with a fresh solution. Then boil in distilled water alone, dry off and place in a warm oven. Then leave in a warm/dry place for several days.
After this seal from the air with either microcrystalline wax or a lacquer (or do both).
