Earlier this week I was visiting friends in central Vermont. Their homesite acerage, as well as the surrounding woods and fields have land-grant history going all the way back to King George III. As with much of the farm and pasture land in New England, they are criss-crossed with stone walls and consist of sloping terrain. I took a couple hours during that visit and searched one of the sloping, grass-covered pastures. I found several interesting late-1800 and early-1900 artifacts. But, the one item that stood out from the day's search was this Vermont Militia button. My understanding is that this Scoville Mfg. Co. button dates to the Civil War. It is approximately 1" in diameter.

It was a true joy to find this artifact. Next, I have to do some searching in the ownership history of the site to see if I can determine a name of a potential Civil War Veteran who dropped this button.

Happy hunting!
