Looks like a "good for" token but lacks the rest of the story. It occurs to me that some amusement parks and boardwalk arcades would make patrons purchase a handful of tokens to access amusements, kinda like subway tokens in stiles. I wonder if this token could be one of those.

Yes,totally agree. Doesn't say ANYTHING. Found it in my neighborhood, it's a mill village, didn't know if it had come from the STARTEX MILL,STARTEX S.C. I've always heard about tokens that came from there but never have seen any. I like your idea better. Thanks for the response, DIG*IT*DUDE out

It seems that the Startex Mill in Tucapau, SC (Startex's former name) did issue its own tokens. They didn't resemble the original poster's, but that such "Hard Times Tokens" or "Good Fors" were fairly common in times of coinage scarcity is recorded in the once-common dictum, "Don't take any wooden nickels." If such tokens were in common use, other merchants in the town may have circulated similar "unpersonalized" trade tokens.

It might be play money. The design looks very similar to the Kingsbury play coin design out of New Hampshire. That would also explain the lack of any overly identifying markings to prevent it being passed as legitimate currency.

It may be an old arcade or carnival token. I've seen some with higher values (usually 25 cents or better) on them before.
Or, like mentioned, could just be play money.

I'm all about the mystery of the history!
