I made a new detecting shovel last week. Nothing fancy. The handle is 1/2" black pipe and the shovel head part is from a piece off of an industrial bandsaw blade that was about 8-9 inches wide. It's 36" long. I welded the pipe straight to the head without the gooseneck like the Sampsons. My welding ability is pretty poor but so far it's holding together. I used it yesterday and pryed some pretty big pieces of iron up with no ill effects.

That must be one hell of a bandsaw. I don't think you have to worry about it bending, those welds will break first.

A buddy used to work at a mill and cut me up some pieces of an old blade to use for knives. And yes it's hard stuff. I worked for hours trying to bend it and still screwed up the bend. That's why it's only about 5" wide. It's just shy of 1/8" thick.

If I remember right he said the blades were in excess of 20 feet in length.
