Spur dig up at about 9-12” depth in known battle area between Spanish and American troops in 1898. Any way to authenticate?

It looks like a spanish-american war cavalry spur to me, but the loops for the strap are rounded. Whereas, most i see online are squared off. Thanks for any help.

Spurs can be difficult to determine age. As you might imagine, they didn't change that much over the years. That yours is iron makes me think it is older and less military, but who is to say it isn't a carryover from an earlier time. The style is also less military and more civilian.

I see some pics of indian-war spanish-american war cavalry spurs that look very similar. Is it possible that its brass and not iron? It look looks like iron to me as well but that seems odd. If it is iron, i would think its extremely old or belonged to a farmer or cattleman of some sort.

Ill take a brush to it and see
