I hope this is ok with the mods, because I posted this find yesterday on ‘coin shooters and relic hunters’.
I’m posting it again here because I have a question(s) related to the button and was hoping for some info.
Out of the plug, the button was attached to a rotten piece of leather. There was even a piece of leather looped through the shank. So initially I was thinking I had a piece of horse tack or something along those lines. Upon cleaning it I became confused. Why would a navy button be attached to leather. A jerkin perhaps? Though I could find no evidence of the navy using jerkins in that period(or after). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, can anyone recommend a good site for locating early veterans? I believe the original home owner was a J. Drown(1865 map). Ironic name for a sailor, no? From McKean township, Erie County, Pa.
Thank you everyone.
