How I ruined my first wheat penny with vinegar cleaning

The best method to clean pennies is tumbling them for about 45 minutes. Never clean key dates though. Leave that work to a pro.

I've always used vinegar but very deluted maybe 90% water and 10% vinegar. Or cheap steak sauce if I want to clean wheaties. But I just did that to see if it works and it did fine for me. A jewerly cleaner might work with a touch of vinegar too.
But I really never clean any coins unless I can't see the dates cause there's a good chance they'd be ruined. Wheaties are just as nice with there patina in place.
However my late Uncle Joe could bring out dates on some no date Buffalo's by heating them one the stove and just when the turned color, quenching them in the sink. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it failed. But there nothing to lost if you try it cause there's no dates you can see if you don't. And a dated Buff is better than a no date. But I never tried it, I just observed him as a kid. HH, Woodstock
