strange problem

I recently got a bounty hunter quicksilver. When I put the batteries in and turned it on it went absolutely berserk. The tones were just sounding like crazy and the display was going up and down the scale nonstop and that was with the detector at rest. I discovered that it would stop after I separated the batteries. If the cases come in contact it goes haywire. I slid a piece of packing foam between them and have been using it ever since. Just doesn't seem quite right that I should have to do that. Any ideas?

Not sure but the batteries may both power different elements and it has a grounding issue??? I know some of the older White's classics have multiple batteries and 2 run the detection circuit and 1 runs the audio portion. May have had a divider originally too? As long as it isn't having problems when in use I'd say roll with it.
