Odd Handle Thing

I was out in a Gold Country canyon, and found this doo-dad. It almost looks like a sword handle, but it 's not. The "pommel" seems to be brass, with a steel shaft down the center (note the modern-seeming notched end), steel separator plates, and what looks like it might be charred wood in one of the gaps.

Does anyone have any idea what this might have been? I'm thinking it's something from the 40s, or so...

Would it have been the churn part of an ice cream maker with the wooden beaters gone?

Thanks, guys. As square as it is, I find it hard to believe that it's a handle of anything, but it's the only thing that seems to make sense, at this point. I looked up churn handles, and nothing looks like this that I came across.

The bottom part looks like it is notched to engage with a motor or something, that's what got me started on the ice cream maker.

I have seen something like that but can't place it. Possibly a gang switch handle. Rotating type.

Memory jog, it reminds me of a tuner handle on an old short wave radio set up. Not quite right and a little too big.
