My hunting partner got permission at a piece of property near where we had been hunting civil war artifacts last winter so we went for a short hunt this afternoon. Brutally hot day today, I only made it about 1 1/2 hours but it was a good hunt. 3 nice 3 ringers, I believe 2 are 54 cal and one 58. Also a button back and what I thought was camp lead or a piece of cut bullet. After cleaning it there is an odd cavity on one side.

Nice. I'd say that piece of lead is a smashed pistol bullet of some sort and the concavity is the base..

What is “camp lead”? I’ve been working what I think is an Union Calvery camp and found about 6 pieces that I think are lead seals or maybe called Bag Seals. They usually have the appearance of having a front and back with a hollow space in between that has been smashed together. I have been curious to know how common these led seals are. Maybe the lead piece you found is a seal too.
