Unique design but those mounting posts and center shaft sure look like a door knob to me as well.

Given the size, the knob on one side with the central shaft and what I assume are threaded posts I'd guess it was a control knob for some piece of equipment.

The spool makes me question things a bit but it could have held a coil of (now missing) wire. Maybe it was a small, wire wound, variable controller of some sort.
