Here is a pic of two silver thimbles. The shorter one was found in May of this year and the taller one was found this week.

Thanks for adding folks! Excellent finds!

Great thread idea ! I love seeing how many styles everyone else has. I've found a handful of thimbles, but only 2 have been 2 silver.

Sterling Thimbles

I didn't know this thread was available until Princess tagged my post. After looking at the variety of Sterling finds I am amazed at how ornate and beautiful they are, it really makes me want to find more. Thanks and happy hunting!

This is my only silver thimble (so far, hopefully...), found it on a farm permission in the front yard about 3-4 inches down.

Let's see em! I've only found one and it came late last season from a late 1800's park. I had the pleasure of seeing one of the nicest I've ever seen dug right in front of me at the same park by bottlecapking. Hoping he posts his. Please keep your posts and pics sterling thimble related only! Thank you and happy hunting!

Mine first and only so far, was found right down the street from me at a 1880s home.

Like any other archaeological site, digging artifacts out of the ground always makes me wonder how they got there. Coins generally make sense, as do can tabs near a picnic site, toy cars on an old playground, and the like. I never really thought about thimbles, until seeing this topic. Not really a question seeking an answer, but for purposes of wondering, how would thimbles get outside? Was it commonplace to carry thimbles, maybe for darning on the move?

These pictures of your all’s finds are fascinating - now I need to find one... ugh...

Mine is in the crushed and cracked variety. But the damn thing’s off my bucket list !

I've been fortunate enough to find 3. One in a very large park, one at the site of an old mansion that is now public property, and one at a permission in the backyard of a circa 1900 row home.

The last was interesting, as the elderly owner gave me permission, but said her late husband owned a metal detector. D'oh! The yard was small, and I was rather pessimistic, but I not only found the thimble (the middle one), but a nice silver spoon, and 4 silver coins, including a walker. Perhaps the husband was a beach hunter, and not a dirt fisher.

I'm glad I found this thread, with so many amazing thimbles posted.

Women sitting around doing mending outside on a nice day, dropping them in the garden is my guess. Or falling out of pockets while hanging laundry.

Here's my number 5 to Copet's number 8. They look very similar!

I found this little squished beauty in a curb strip a couple of years ago. Not sure how the other detectorists missed it, unless it was because it was near the surface and they were only hunting for deep oldies (it was in an old section of a small town). Glad that they passed on it, if that was the case. There was no missing this loud, quarter signal!
