The highway department is putting a culvert through my yard, and I started noticing a layer of ash about two feet down as they were digging. I pulled about 8 bottles out so far, most with mold lines that end halfway up the neck. I will post some pics.

could be an old dump, but most likely an old privy site. ash layer most of the time would mean an old privy.
If you find a layer of ash or clay, it's usually a cap for a privy.. The cap is a layer that they used for keeping the smell down or giving the privy a "fresh" start.

Cool! A few years back we paved our driveway, and during the final landscaping discovered an old trash pit for the farm. LOTS of bottle shards ( and necks) and pieces of pottery, but nothing intact. We were pretty disappointed. Our pit was about two feet deep, and about 5 feet by 10 feet in area. No ash layer, just dirt. Whatever you have, go for it! I agree with the detector idea. Good luck!
