Plastic, Glass, or Genuine?

I dug this at a CW site (that does have some modern trash) and have no idea what it is. My first guess is that it might be part of a letter opener, but that's just a guess. The red end piece is held in place by a silver-colored metal but I can't tell if it is silver or aluminum and it appears that there are screw threads on it. If anyone has any idea of what this is, please let me know. Thanks!

i think Cliff is on it. Either way i think it's a "newer" item. I feel like i see fine screw threads poking out of the rust in the skinny section on the second photo. that would kind of eliminate the idea its super old.
