Nova Scotia, Canada, eh.
i found this little brass item a few inches down where an old woods road crosses a former rail line.
the only writing i can see on it is "J 980". i don't know if it might be from a gun, sewing machine or a door mechanism. brass would likely be too soft for any of those uses. (?)
anyone have any ideas on this one? i'm stumped.
and yes, i know the other item is a penny. :D

thanks in advance,

Pete

Seems like it might be part of a door latch of some type- the slot which is parallel to a flat surface, and then the quarter round latch part, and the angled hammer part that another piece pushes on to make it slide... ?

well, i've just googled a bazillion images. it doesn't look like it's a latch or from a door lock, but it could be from a padlock, and the size of this piece would indicate a fairly large one, possibly a railroad lock. (i did find it very close to an old rail line!) i'll bet if i were to dig up some of the millions of iron signals in that general area, i might find the actual lock..... or pieces of it.
