I've been lurking around here for a while and have noticed several threads about prolonging the life of the tip on a Pro-Pointer. Here's how I did it:

I work in the aircraft business. When we change out or build oxygen, hydraulic, water lines and we use new fittings they usually come with thread protectors that we throw away. I was thinking that these would be great for the Pro-Pointer!

I filed down about 1 inch of the scraper flush with the body. Then just slid the protector on. It's a fairly tight fit and does take a little effort to get off. I like the orange color. It would make it easier to find if you misplaced it.

The inside diameter on the protector is .875.

I like it! But where would a mere mortal with a desk job find one of those?!?! Or anyone know anything that is just like it that might be more widely available?

Thx
Rich

If I send a self addressed bubble envelope, do you think I could have one to try out? If so pm me your address, I'll send you something for trade. :)

OK how many use their Propointer to dig with?

I've owned 4 Garrett Propointers and and them many years and not one ever had the tip wear out. Never even had one stop working. Not saying your idea isn't a good one, just that I see a lot of people posting about wearing their propointers out.

Me too......no real wear on the tip of my Pro Pointer. How does one wear through the plastic tip anyways?

Dave

This rocky soil is very hard on coils and pinpointers. My coils look like they got into a fight with a bear...lol

Good idea. Will use it on my pro pointer. :) I use tape at the moment, works but needs to be replaces after a few hunts.

If anyone wants one PM me your mailing address and I'll send it to you!! I have about a dozen.

You can send me back whatever you think it's worth!!

Keep in mind I collect $1 casino chips. (If there happens to be a casino near you!)

Planedoc was gracious enough to send one to me. So first, let me publicly say thanks! I do love this forum and the MD community in general. I got to try it out this past weekend. Slipped on easily, but stayed quite secure. No negative effects that I could discern, and helped keep the tip clean. No need to scrape dried-on dirt out of the "bellybutton" on the tip of the PP, and the material itself wipes off easily.

Did we end world hunger? Are we saving babies here? Nah. But a nice solution if you have something like these, and good reuse of a found material. I will continue to use it, and appreciate having it.

Hope I can find something to share with the forum someday. Thanks again!
Rich

I agree with an earlier post...I haven't worn my two PPs tips in the least and I have had then for 2 years. I did however install similar type protectors recently and maybe it is my imagination, but I seem to notice that the end point now needs a direct pointing to get the best pickup. I think that I will lose my protectors, at least one, just to know. The ProPointer does a much better job jabbing into the colds without(naked) anyway. martin

Thanks for the kind words Rich! My offer still stands! If anyone wants one just PM me your address and I'll get one out to you! If your digging in rocky soil this is a great way to protect the tip! I also have a few in black.

Planedoc sent me a couple last week, they fit perfect and I do root around in the dirt with mine, any added protection is usefull.
Planedoc, I sent you a little gift in return for your generosity, hope you like it.
I really like how the people of the metal detecting commumity help each other out with little favors like this.
Thanks
