Hi, I introduced myself about a month ago. My first dig was at my own house which is 100 years old. Nothing really if interest but it was good practice. I found match box cars( my son's), about 85 cents all new coins from the 90's. Nails, staples , It must have been from a Family get together on my front lawn. I don't call that my first official dig, but today I was at a house that was built in 1868 one of the oldest in my town. Which is in upstate NY. I found my first silver coins, one is a dime I think it's mercury, the other is silver but look smashed up maybe but a dozer. A couple of copper buttons one has anice design. Where I was looking the old driveway was torn up and being prepped for a new one. So i hit that first seeing know one has seen that dirt for a long many years. And that's all I got to was the driveway. The owner told me I could go back anytime I wanted. So here are my first official dig. I guess I can say I broke my cherry finding my first silver coin my first time out. I'm really happy. Here are the pics

Looks like you had an awesome hunt, very jealous. Looking online that button is a "Pre-Civil War Rifleman Button".

Have you considered making your own electrolysis setup yet? That key should be a good candidate, I saved one similar with my tank.

I watched a few you tube videos on how to do it , I'll try but this key looks pretty rugged. I cannot believe I found silver my first time out. Can't wait to go back

Having done it with many toasted pieces. I will say you can wind up with some pits in the finish metal, rust chunks will fall loose. But the end product always comes out so much nicer looking that a rust ball. If you click my key photo you can see more details to it.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, can anyone tell me about this button, it's very ornate?

Fantastic first hunt! If that's just the driveway I can't wait to see what you find on the rest of the property, Congrats and good luck on the return trip!

Scroll up to my first post, I had put some info on your button there with a link to a page selling some that are the same style.

Thanks toy soldier, that even better then expected, I do collect military which is my first passion. So as of right now that is the oldest piece in my collection. Since the house was built in the 1860's I wonder how a 1820's button got there. Where I live is rich with history, fort Edward, Saratoga, Rogers island Is a 1/4 mile down the road from me. Lake George to name a few.

That is a great button find.
Probably the uniform was 'in the family' for many years. Then somehow the button fell off and got lost in the yard.
Maybe a youngster was wearing the coat playing solder and lost the button.
