Went with my buddy Mike back to the spot where I found the CS tongue in this post https://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=288944

We were on the continuing quest to try to find the wreath. No luck this time with the wreath but I found a few things (skeleton key, small CW era flower button..) and this VA Militia button beside house in with a fair amount of metal scraps and junk. I haven’t been out diggin in a while so this really made my day.

I'd bet the good Civil War reenactment folks of the 49th Virginia Infantry Regiment would love to see those finds. I met several of them in 2019 at the annual "Clifton Day" celebrations (see: https://www.cliftonday.com/), which had preempted the regular "Bikes and Breakfast" gatherings of classic and other motorcycles there that I attend every 2nd Sunday of the month (see: https://www.bikesandbreakfast.com/). You can reach The 49th through their website here: https://www.49thvirginiainfantry.com/

We must always remember that when compared to the South, the Lincoln administration had unlimited resources when it came to men, raw materials and manufacturing capability plus the vast majority of battles were fought in the South away from the Federal population centers.
With the puny war production of the South, a Virginia militia button is really rare considering the few numbers produced.

Forgive my ignorance but with the one piece construction would this be a Civil War button or older?
