I was out hunting a civil war area a few weeks ago finding normal minis balls, buttons and such when I found these two items. The first appears to be made out of brass and has 4 beveled screw holes. It appears that it was attached to something iron from the all of the rust stuck to the bottom. The vertical part is spade shaped with two holes in it and under it are two more holes that appear to be like a hinge, but that makes no sense because of the location of the four beveled holes.

Then I found this broken piece of who knows what. I was cleaning it up and the spacing seemed odd so I laid a minie ball against it and WOW! But I have no idea what purpose it would have, I am guessing the spacing is a mere coincidence and it is just some random trash.

Any insight would be appreciated!

For that hinge, I'm guessing it was something like a door stop or secretary's desk hinge. The large beveled screws were the main fasteners to the body. The small part sticking up would have held some rubber or wooden damper or stopper to protect the piece that would swing closed.
