This very odd shape came out of the ground with a bunch of rocks yesterday . l found the piece of metal the detector had sounded off too. This item is about 3 in long.and 1-1/3/4 in wide.. Heavy.. Non -metallic looks like a stony material.. Kinda a grey-blue color.Weighs 9.6 oz. It has a hole drilled clean thru it. And angles ground into it all over.. Doesn't look natural or random??? Oddest thing I ever found???? Anyone have any ideas???? Thanks Tony Az

In all seriousness, it's certainly intriguing. Obviously not natural, and the modifications are far too precise to be done with primitive/native tools. It looks to me like a string would have gone through the hole and then tied around the block where the notches keep them from slipping. For what purpose and why? No idea.

I do think we occasionally stumble upon "one off" objects created by people pursuing hobbies or homespun inventions.

Its a piece of soapstone. Soapstone was and still is used today.
As to what that piece is used for, we can only guess.

My first thought was soapstone too. It should be really soft if it is. You should be almost able to scratch it with your fingernail if it is.

Looking at the fifth photo it reminds me of a locking ratchet mechanism where the notch would mate up with teeth on a gear or similar. A rod would go through the hole so it could pivot up for the next tooth, but not let it slip backwards.

Looks like a soapstone carving practice piece, or maybe used as an edge grinder tool for flintknapping...or some other purpose. The history mystery makes it a cool find.

Thanks everyone for helpful comments on this brainteaser..[emoji196]Tony AZ...

I may be way off... but when I first looked at your find it reminded me of those small carved Zuni fetishes... maybe someone started shaping it and didn't get around to finishing? Cool whatever it is.

Maybe you should try running a string thru the hole and wear it around your neck for awhile. If it's from outer space and has powers you could become a super hero. "Metal-Detector-Man" Its worth a try.

Some one has cut the basic shape of this soapstone piece with either a hacksaw or a bandsaw from the photos showing all the parallel scratches along with he flat sides. They were making something and were in the process of carving notches on one end, perhaps to hang it with some wire wrapping from a necklace, when the girl friend saw it and said, I ain't wearin' that ugly thing! IMHO.:lol:

Nah. If you saw my flat feet you'd know I was secretly Fred Flintstone. Yes, that's part of the car, and
Wilma is on me about the honey-do list so I gotta fix it. I will PM you where to send it as we moved from Bedrock after that movie thing. Rubble's moved in next door again, but we voted Rosie O'Donnell off the island.(new Betty is Sophia Vergara and Wilma AINT happy about THAT).

It looked like a sharpening stone to me. No sure what they are typically made of.
