Friday after worked I stopped to check out a spot that according to an 1833 map, a home once existed. With a quickly setting sun, I wasn't able to find the site so a return trip was needed. I managed to free up yesterday afternoon and went back to the shores of the Niagara River. I was able to find an area along the river bank that had an old stonework and what looked like the remains of a stacked stone chimney. I moved back up to the bank and was able to hit a 53' silver dime....not period of course but silver is silver. I still haven't, outside the stonework, been able to determine the location of the site but I will go back and dig up the some of the many iron signals from all over the area. I did dig one and it was a melted iron slab that was about 1.5 square feet in size. I hit many of the lower spots to see if these were perhaps closer to original grade and I hit the 1968 Kennedy Half along with a clad dime and quarter. Again not period but a nice addition the the 2018 coin total. As I was walking out, reflecting on the day and the tranquility of this area that I had nearly to myself for 8 hrs, I came across this tribute to a fallen hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation 86 years ago. Thank You Inspector Vidmar for securing our freedom.
